Alejandro Domínguez was re-elected as president of Conmebol and will continue for another term at the head of the continent's highest body. The Paraguayan executive added all ten possible votes in his single list and will begin his formal mandate in 2023.
The president will be accompanied by Francisco Javier Egas (president of the Ecuadorian Federation) as 1st vice president, Claudio Fabián Tapia (president of the AFA) in the role of 2nd vice president and Pablo Milad (president of the ANFP) in the role of 3rd vice president.
The man who started his journey in Conmebol in 2016 will be in the main armchair until 2027. It will be his third term after being re-elected for the first time in 2018. “If there is one thing that life taught me is to be recognized at all times and with my hand on my heart, I want to thank you. For the work that everyone does for South American football in their country, but also because of the work they do with me, with us,” he said in his first words.
The 75th Congress of the South American Football Confederation took place in Qatar, where the World Cup draw will take place hours later and where the FIFA Congress was held yesterday. “I want to thank all the clubs that give us their trust year after year and make the most competitive football in the world,” said the president.
Dominguez, a 50-year-old businessman, was the only candidate. In Doha he was elected at the end of a vote of the ten South American federations, after having succeeded in reforming the institution under which he placed himself following the arrest of his predecessor and compatriot Juan Ángel Napout, who had been sentenced to nine years in prison in the United States for his involvement in a vast corruption scandal.
In the context of the covid-19 pandemic, Alejandro Domínguez was proud to have managed to organize the 2021 Copa América in Brazil, while the competition was initially scheduled in Argentina and Colombia. To this end, CONMEBOL obtained 50,000 doses of the Sinovac vaccine, aimed at immunizing players, coaches and referees for the tournament.
“We were the only non-governmental organization in the world that got a batch of vaccines to immunize its ecosystem,” he said during the Congress, attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“I want to thank my wife and family who are going to have to accompany me for five more years in football. I am grateful to everyone and happy to return to this commitment. I remember when Chiqui (Tapia) said 'President I want to propose re-election'. And I want to thank you Chiqui. But also to each of you because the support was unanimous”, he expanded in his speech.
