The Davis Cup will be played again in our country. This Thursday, the World Group I draw was held and it was determined that Team Colombia will face Turkey, in local condition, for two days between September 16 and 18, 2022.
The draw, which took place at the International Tennis Federation headquarters in the city of London, had Colombia as one of the pre-qualified countries thanks to its position in the ITF ranking of nations. Given this, it was drawn to one of the non-pre-qualified countries and the ballot chosen was that of Turkey, a nation we had never faced in the history of this tournament.
Therefore, a draw was held to choose the location where Team Colombia benefited from this condition, so the country will once again receive a tie for the first time since March 2020 when it hosted Argentina for the Qualifiers round and won the victory.
This will be the fifth time that Colombia will face a European team for the Davis Cup and has a record of 1 win (against Sweden in 2019) and 3 losses (to Croatia in 2017, Belgium in 2020 and Italy in 2021).
Turkey, which is captained by Marsel Ilhan, arrives at this stage after beating Uzbekistan 3-2 in the World Group I Play-off series that was played in early March. In fact, he has won three of his last four series (in addition to the Uzbeks, against Latvia and Denmark).
The winner of this series will qualify for the 2023 Qualifiers round, where he will have the chance to qualify for next year's Davis Cup Finals. While the loser must play, also in 2023, the World Group I Play-off series.
The Colombian Tennis Federation will begin the process to choose the host city of this round, as well as the surface conditions, a result that will be announced in the coming weeks.
Alejandro Falla, captain of the Colombian team, was motivated to start as favorites in the series. Together with the players and the president of the Colombian Tennis Federation, they will analyze the rival in order to determine the venue:
