The controversy over alleged double militancy of senator-elect Humberto de la Calle does not cease. Recently, the politician's campaign manager, Wilson Castro Manrique, sent a right of petition to the Ministry of the Interior, stating that this portfolio did not have the competence to define whether de la Calle was engaging in this prohibited conduct or not.
The Ministry of the Interior pointed out that its communication on the subject would have been misinterpreted as it did not really represent a decisive decision or judgment.
The portfolio assured that the concept issued by the Directorate for Democracy, Citizen Participation and Community Action does not constitute a definitive ruling, so the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Council of State will be responsible for issuing a determination.
Likewise, he clarified that this portfolio is not the call to certify, investigate and/or punish causes relating to disabilities due to double membership.
After clarifying its competence in the face of this possible conduct by Colombian politicians, the Ministry of the Interior reported that “we will proceed on the basis of the facts and the current regulatory framework to transfer to the National Electoral Council and the Civil Service and Consultation Room of the Council of State” so that they are the ones who study the possible dual militancy of Humberto de la Calle and issue their concept.
It should be recalled that all this controversy was sparked by the support that de la Calle has expressed to the candidate for the presidency of Colombia by the Centro Esperanza Coalition, Sergio Fajardo. It is important to note that the endorsement that Humberto de la Calle obtained to become an elected senator is from the Oxygen Green Party of which Ingrid Betancourt, also a candidate for the presidency, is a member.
Sergio Fajardo says Humberto de la Calle represents the Esperanza Center Coalition
During the installation of the campaign committee in Bogotá, Sergio Fajardo took the opportunity to refer to this controversial issue that has been on the table for several days.
The candidate for the presidency of Colombia assured that de la Calle belongs to the coalition to which he is part, despite the fact that the endorsement was given by the Green Oxygen party.
“These people were left with dreams here, but trapped in a legal world that doesn't make sense. Where Humberto de la Calle is there is no problem. He represents the Centro Esperanza Coalition and we are going to build together and Humberto is going to be important here,” he added.
Likewise, it became known that last Thursday Humberto de la Calle proposed to Íngrid Betancourt to give up his candidacy for the presidency of Colombia and join the Centro Esperanza Coalition. With this, the politician would not incur the double militancy that is about to be established.
