One of the most common problems for mayors of the most important cities in the country is the issue of mobility, something that sometimes turns out to be an almost impossible mission. It is for this reason that in response to the proposal of Mayor Daniel Quintero, there was a lot of criticism on social networks, however, the local president states that his intention is to discourage the use of the car in the capital of Antioquia.

Medellín currently has a double-digit daily peak and license plate for cars and motorcycles, however, Mayor Quintero's proposal is to eliminate this measure and instead of restricting vehicular traffic, a daily charge could be made for this on the city's roads.

Mayor Daniel Quintero has made clear his position regarding the peak and plate, a measure in which he does not believe and stated that, “the proposal would be to eliminate the vehicle tax or the bearing tax, which is annual and convert it into a tax imposed by what you roll with technological systems that measure how many kilometers you travel per day and with a charge that could range from 10 thousand per day using the car.”

Despite the fact that in the capital of Antioquia there is a double-digit peak and license plate, vehicle congestion has continued in some areas of the city, which is why it decided to present this option and in which it argued that a test was already carried out in Medellin and left quite positive results with regard to mobility.

“Medellin has already done a test, a congestion charge that operated for about a month that allowed us to understand, for example, that if we place a charge for 48,000 pesos a day, 97% prefer to leave the car at home, only 3% actually use it,” said Mayor Daniel Quintero.

And he added that, “if you want to reduce mobility in the city by 10% or 20% you can lower the fare even from 48,000 pesos to 10,000 pesos, eliminate the pick and plate completely, and tell him, whoever takes out the car today pays 10,000 pesos but removes all the picos and plates. I am the enemy of the beak and plaque.”

Vehicle sales in Medellín have increased in recent years, which means that more cars are on the roads and there are more and more traffic congestions occurring in different areas of the city. On this, Quintero reiterated that, “I think we can set a tariff for the use of the flat-rate car and with a surcharge for the most congested areas.”

Daniel Quintero asserted that people, having to pay an annual tax, try to get the most out of the car and seek to “get the most out of it, then use it even to go to the store”, so when making a daily charge for bearing people would begin to rationalize on what they have been given to the car, so this would reduce the number of cars in the city.
