By a slight difference in votes, on 30 March, the plenary session of the Senate of the Republic rejected the agreement which called for the appearance of the perpetrators of the works of the Mayan Train.

This, after the majority of Moreno Nacional Regeneration (Morena) and its parliamentary allies imposed on Rogelio Jiménez Pons and Javier May Rodríguez, former and current head of the Mega Project respectively, explaining the anomalies that the opposition detected in it.

That is why the influencer, Chumel Torres, regretted that this majority opted for works that - he points out - would entail the destruction of the jungles of the south of the country: “What a nightmare this government”, he said on his Twitter account.

This agreement met the demand of Xochitl Gálvez, Senator for National Action (PAN), that Jiménez Pons and May Rodríguez report on the cutting, removal and unnecessary transplantation of more than 20 thousand trees: “It is the result of improvisation”.

The fact is that, according to the blue and white, the National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur) would have authorized the measure to modify the route of a section of the megaproject, which is why it had to be held accountable for the environmental impact that this would entail; the technical support and the dates on which it was decided.

Gálvez also stated that the removal of the 20,000 trees was allegedly not authorized by the Environmental Impact Manifestation (MIA), nor was it considered as forest loss.

It should be recalled that, with the same argument, on March 29, activists from the international organization Greenpeace symbolically chained themselves to the machinery used for the construction of Section 5, accusing that the construction lacks environmental impact verification and violates environmental legislation.

However, the president of the republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), has endorsed a position contrary to these statements, ensuring that the flagship project of his administration has all the permits in order, in addition to be backed by moral conviction to preserve the environment.

That is why the Tabasqueño expressed himself confident in the conclusion of the Mayan Train, despite the attempts of non-governmental organizations or personalities to stop the progress of the works.

Even with the allegations of destruction of the environment; the call of some celebrities to protect the region, or peaceful demonstrations, the president assured that the Mega Project “has the support of the people”.

“They think it's the time before: 'We summon 10 famous artists and say that the jungle is being destroyed, (we say) no to the Mayan Train and with that we stop the work, '” he said during his morning conference on March 31.
