Christian Cueva became one of the best players in the Peruvian national team's 2-0 victory against Paraguay for the last date of the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers.
Christian Cueva was the protagonist of Peru's two goals in the match played at the National Stadium in Lima. The midfielder shone with his technique and gambetas in the clash against the Charrúas.
However, one of Christian Cueva's outstanding plays was in the 67th minute. The Peruvian national team controlled a Paraguay attack with a short clearance from full-back Miguel Trauco.
Christian Cueva received the service of Trauco stuck to the side line. The first rival to come forward was Guarani defender Robert Rojas. The Peruvian midfielder gambetted him in the first instance for the inside of the playing field.
Then, Paraguay's flyer Jesús Medina put pressure on Cueva, which coupled with the siege of Rojas. 'Aladino' stepped on the ball and came out on the opposite side of the play, mocking his two brands.
But, Christian Cueva's action didn't end there. The 30-year-old midfielder was surrounded by the two players mentioned above and was joined by Guarani footballer Richard Ortiz.
Cueva's reaction was brilliant as he picked up the ball between his two rivals and gave Peruvian attacker Gianluca Lapadula a pass. Unfortunately, the start of the Peruvian national team was cut off by Paraguay.
Even the reporter of the Movistar Deportes broadcast of the match was amazed by the move: “Christian, what are you going to do? This is Cueva... My God, what a genius,” said Gino Bonatti at the same time that the National Stadium exploded in applause and a loud ovation.
In addition, Christian Cueva was decisive in the first goal of the Peruvian national team. The Peruvian flyer assisted Gianluca Lapadula with a long pass to define one touch and score 1-0.
In the second goal of the Peruvian national team, Cueva made a luxury move by raising the ball in the form of a 'sombrerito' to elude his rival on the edge of the box. He then attended for Edison Flores who threw the center for Yoshimar Yotún's' scissor 'goal.
The Peruvian national team will face Australia or the United Arab Emirates in the World Cup repechage next June. The opponent will be the winner of phase 4 of the Asian Single Match Qualifiers.
RICARDO GARECA'S ANALYSIS
The coach of the Peruvian national team analyzed the bicolor qualification to the World Cup Repechage and valued the performance of his players during the Qatar 2022 Qualifiers.
“The key was the uptick we had during the qualifying round, from the middle to the front. We didn't start well but the rally was important and gave us the chance to access the repechage. I want to congratulate the boys for qualifying on the last date for the repechage. Now it is to know the rival, we are going to be aware of who is our turn. I think we will have enough time, although it will be a difficult opponent. We are all looking to get to Qatar, but the most important thing now is to try to be with the family, that the players return to the rhythm, that the boys with problems recover and thus arrive in an important way,” said Ricardo Gareca.
