Campaign against revictimization is launched in entertainment media; apologize from Gustavo Adolfo Infante

After journalist Gustavo Adolfo Infante commented on the air about his dissatisfaction that actor Mauricio Martínez did not want to give him an interview to talk about sexual abuse that he experienced years ago by former artistic manager Antonio Berumen, now the actor has joined an initiative against the revictimization in the media.

The Mexican historian and singer who has ventured into Broadway musical theater in recent years thanked the organization Nosotras for them demanding a public apology from Infante, in addition to asking that the journalist receive information about sexual violence and protocols on how to address the issue in the media.

“It is inconceivable that on national television, a host disqualifies, revictimizes and humiliates a victim by calling him “the raped” for the simple fact that he does not want to give him an interview, questioning and without any knowledge of how these issues are publicly dealt with within the field of human rights,” reads the document disseminated among the media.

“The responsibility that the driver's speech has must be taken not only on a public figure that is the focus of a specific case, but on the thousands of people who do not want to open their personal issues for people like Mr. Infante and who because of communication formats such as those that Grupo Imagen has not taken care of. That is why it has the obligation to achieve this change in the treatment of cases of sexual violence in all its variants, regardless of who it is and without personal vengeance involved”, he adds.

For them, we demanded three points in his document regarding the communicator and the media company he works for.

“In relation to the statements made by the conductor Gustavo Adolfo Infante, broadcast yesterday, March 29, 2022 on the program Sale el sol of the Imagen Television channel and on digital platforms of the company Grupo Imagen, the undersigned indicate and request:

Public apology by the aggressor Gustavo Adolfo Infante to the same extent and proportion that he verbally assaulted a victim of sexual abuse, but also, implicitly, thousands of victims of these crimes.

Information on the gender protocols that this company has to deal with this type of behavior as well as guarantees of non-repetition.

Training and awareness-raising of issues related to sexual violence and social realities”.

For his part, the actor thanked the letter sent by the organization on his Instagram account: “All my thanks; let's fight so that this does not happen anymore and help make visible the serious problem to change the reality of Mexico with such a delicate issue.”

What is revictimization? This is how the organization defines it:

“Secondary revictimization or victimization is what arises from the fact that the person who has experienced a traumatic experience when coming into contact with the authorities, media, persons or institutions of the state, is the recipient of unfair treatment and may even be criminalized for the same act that he was the recipient of.”

The letter was released after the journalist of Grupo Imagen was upset on March 29 that the Mexican actor had, in his words, disparaged show programs to go to other types of “more serious” news outlets to present his case.

“The one who should learn is Mauricio Martínez. He sees us all like that on the top because he was raped. Because he was raped, he doesn't give an interview to show programs. She just goes with Adela Micha that nobody sees her... her lawyers are morons. It's not promotion, but tomorrow when I go with Adela and go with the news, I don't want to know anything as a discriminator”, were the words of the headline of Firsthand.
