With the situation that occurred at the airport in Rionegro, Antioquia, recently. Where an emergency landing generated an air crisis not only in Antioquia but in different parts of the country, with delays and cancellations of numerous flights, the debate on a second runway was reopened at the José María Córdova airport.
The mayor of Medellín, Daniel Quintero, took the opportunity to recall that one of his proposals since he came to the municipal administration was to build a second runway in Rionegro, as well as two other air terminals in Antioquia.
He also stressed that Uribism was responsible for plunging the proposal into the Council of Medellín and that is why today the city is at risk of suffering this type of trauma every time a situation such as that of the Latam plane occurs.
“Immediately we came to the government we understood the problem that Antioquia has, it's not just Medellin. We have a problem because there is only one airstrip for large format international and domestic aircraft. It is a sun on the track that is also running out. It is estimated that in five years that track will not be enough to meet the demand of Medellin,” said Daniel Quintero.
According to the local president, that will put a ceiling on tourism and the economic development of the city. In addition, he said that in the first months of government he proposed to the city council a draft agreement that sought to convert Olaya Herrera into a commercial and industrial company in the state to develop the second runway in Rionegro, as well as an airport in San Pedro de los Milagros and another in Santa Fe de Antioquia.
Through his social networks, Quintero recalled a triune by former president Álvaro Uribe, a year ago, in which he said that the bench of the Democratic Center had to vote no to the proposal to build the second track in Rionegro.

Do Uribistas deny responsibility for the Democratic Center?
In response to the comments of the mayor of Medellín, some political figures went out to try to deny the local president, among them the former mayor of Rionegro, Andrés Julián Rendón, a member of the Democratic Center.
“This is an infamy. Don't lie to the public anymore, the second runway of the airport is a compelling necessity of the department and the country. It has been an issue that the National Government has been ignoring since 2015. From the region we have advocated that progress be made in the purchase of land”, said the former official before one of Quintero's trills on this issue.
The thing did not stop there and Daniel Quintero brought up another publication from a year ago, in which Rendón suggested that the mayor of Medellín could not make decisions about the José María Córdova airport because it is located in Rionegro and not in Medellin.
“Infamy yours with Medellin, Rionegro, San Pedro de los Milagros and Santa Fe de Antioquia. What interests caused you Andrés Julián and the entire CD to oppose Medellin putting resources for second runway and new airports,” Quintero highlighted.
