With almost two months before the fight between Saúl Canelo Álvarez and Dmitry Bivol takes place, the expectations of the fight continue to grow as it will be the first fight that tapatio will have this 2022 after its unification in the 168 pounds in November 2021, so it will mean a new challenge for the best pound for pound.
But, because he will fight with a Russian boxer, controversy was generated about the event because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Within the boxing field, the call was made to cancel the fight in order to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine, but the World Boxing Council (WBC) did not do so and supported Canelo's decision.
Mauricio Sulaimán, president of the WBC, explained the reason why the Canelo vs. Bivol fight will mark a before and after in international politics. He pointed out that stellar combat will show that sport can be put before issues on the political agenda.
At the usual WBC coffee Tuesday meeting, the top councilor of the World Council said that it would be a shame to engage Saul's fight with Dmitry in a conflict that is far from his reach, so he shared his joy that Tapatio's commitment remains firm.
When the war had just started, the World Boxing Association (WBA) shared its position and listed a series of restrictions on Russian boxers registered with the WBA, among which the following stand out: they will not be able to carry their flag and neither will their national anthem sound. As soon as these rules were announced, it was thought that the fight in tapatio would be canceled, however, it did not pass and the contract was maintained.
Later, the first cameo was made between the two fighters and unlike what happened with Caleb Plant, it took place without any relevant incident. Both fighters answered questions from the press and both shook hands without causing any controversy.
The record that Saúl Álvarez holds so far is 57 wins, 39 by knockout, one defeat and two draws, while Bivol has 19 victories, of which 11 are on the fast track, and so far he has not accumulated any losses.
