The technical director of the Mexican football team, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, said on Tuesday that he hopes to recover from a double retinal detachment in his right eye in order to be able to take a plane that will lead him to the Tri in the Qatar 2022 World Cup in November forthcoming.
But first he will have to tie up the direct qualification this Wednesday against El Salvador at the Azteca stadium. He said so at a press conference.
It should be recalled that the Argentine strategist has been operated on twice for the problem in the eye. The first was in September 2021, when he missed the visiting duels of the Concacaf Octagonal Final against Costa Rica and Panama.
The second intervention for the Argentine was in February of this year, so he was not on the bench in last Sunday's 0-1 win over Honduras in San Pedro Sula, a result that puts Mexico on one foot in the World Cup.
Tata will return to the bench in Mexico against El Salvador, a match corresponding to the last day of the octagonal and in which the Mexicans must draw a win or a draw to confirm one of the three direct tickets that are distributed in Concacaf. Otherwise he would have to look again for a pass against New Zealand, champion of the Oceania tie.
Mexico ranks third in the octagonal with 25 points, the same as the United States, second, and three points behind the leader Canada; El Salvador is sixth and is already eliminated.
