Extraordinary colors, large denominations or even old banknotes are offered by a commercial internet platform at high prices. This time we will talk about a copy that was issued years ago, and is quoted on a website for more than 9 thousand pesos, but a collector bought it much cheaper.
And it is that according to the fan of so-called paper money, there are many people who place exorbitant costs and are not worth them. Even when asked what he thinks of people who sell bills or coins at extraordinary prices, he said that they are exceeded.
“They are speculators, they give ridiculous values to banknotes that don't have them . It's one thing to try to sell a ticket for its peculiar serial number, at a price perhaps twice its value, but trying huge prices is ridiculous. Sadly people fall.”
What is the ticket?
It is a Mexican specimen with predominantly purple color, which according to the Bank of Mexico was issued between 1978 and 1979 and bears the image of a Mexican politician.
It is part of the oldest copies that exist to date, it has a denomination of 10,000 pesos and was printed by the American Bank Note Company, an American company based in New York in charge of foreign exchange processing.
This paper money is presumed by the Mercado Libre platform at a cost of up to 10 thousand pesos.
However, the collector who gave the interview to the media emphasized that he achieved it in just 3,500 pesos.
What are its characteristics?
It shows on its obverse the effigy of Matías Romero, an Oaxacan politician of the last century, who served as finance secretary during the administrations of then-presidents Benito Juárez and Porfirio Díaz.
The image of Matías is displayed inside an oval, along with the denomination of the banknote with letter and number in the center of it, as well as the number in each corner.
On the back of the copy, the color green predominates, as well as a vignette of the National Palace in Mexico City, as was left after its third floor was built, during the administration of former President Plutarco Elías Calles.
This curious purple specimen was “the protagonist” in a film from the golden age of Mexican cinema, called El Hombre de Papel, a 1963 drama starring Ignacio López Tarso, who gives life to a silent pepenator who finds the banknote and triggers the greed of those around him.
In this regard, although the Banco de México (Banxico) has recognized that people can market their coins or banknotes at the desired cost, the ideal is to visit an expert or consult a numismatic store before buying, to know the real value of a piece, as well as the elements that it must contain.
Another example of stratospheric costs is that of a coin commemorating the beginning of Mexico's independence with a minting error, which is offered at a huge price, through an internet trading platform. Although according to one expert, such a piece should be purchased at less than 300 pesos.
It has a five-peso denomination, was created in honor of the Bicentennial of Independence, and bears the image of Francisco Primo de Verdad y Ramos, one of the most important promoters and defenders of the social contract and popular sovereignty in New Spain.
