This Monday, March 28, 2022, the National Association of Performers (ANDI) announced the death of actress Raquel Pankowsky, who at the age of 69 lost her life for reasons not yet specified. It is known that the comedian had suffered from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) for years, so her lung health had been diminished, a reason that could have influenced her death.
After the news broke, various entertainment figures sent their condolences to the actress' family and mourned the death of the actress who began her artistic career in the 1970s.
Pankowsky participated in theater and in telenovelas such as Carousel, A hook to the heart and What poor so rich, but it was undoubtedly his character in “Martita According” that brought him great projection and popularity to the public. This role was a parody of Martha Sahagún, wife of former Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada.
With the character, Raquel Pankowsky participated in political satire projects such as From gayola and The privilege of commanding in the 2000s, gaining public acceptance. And it is that Pankowsky herself said at the time that the character of the former first lady saved her from a depression in which she was immersed, feeling, in the midst of menopause, that her work as an actress was not sufficiently valued.
It was thanks to “Martita According” that Raquel was able to make a career breakthrough and buy the apartment in which she lived all these years. Although Pankowsky was frivolously and superficially satirizing Vicente Fox's wife, the two women once had a cordial encounter, in which Sahagún told her that he admired her for her courage.
“I was called from the magazine 'Época' to do an interview between Martha and me, in disguise, but I said I had no interest. They talked to me to tell me that the lady was delighted to meet me and no way of saying that I didn't want to go,” Raquel recalled in an interview for Mara Patricia Castañeda.
“He told me that he liked brave women, that I was a brave woman and that I had to thank him in all the interviews where I appeared. I also thank you now. He did give it to him from the heart because he could have stopped me and he didn't stop me; he didn't like what I was obviously doing, but he didn't stop me,” he recalled with journalist Gustavo Adolfo Infante.
Now, the reaction of the former Mexican first lady to the actress's death has transcended. It was in a WhatsApp conversation with journalist Osiris Carbajal that Martha expressed her feelings, and although she is away from Mexico for work, she wrote a few words for the remembered Pankowsky.
“I'm glad to greet you. I ask you a big apology, but I'm away on a business trip. I don't run networks. But if my request is valid, I would like to convey my condolences on his passing. I always had a good and respectful relationship with Raquel. I am glad to know that at the time I served her for the work she was doing. Now I wish you to rest in peace”, the conversation that the journalist posted on his Twitter account reads.
Martha Sahagún's condolences come almost 24 hours later than her husband's. The former president who was in charge of the country from 2000 to 2006 expressed his feelings on his Twitter account on Monday afternoon: “For Raquel my admiration and respect. Rest in Peace! A big hug for your relatives.”
