The official draw for the 19th edition of the FIBA AmeriCup, which will be played in Brazil from 2-11 September 2022, was held this Tuesday in the city of Miami, United States. The Colombian basketball team was placed in group A.
Recall that the national team achieved an unprecedented victory, a triumph that took the first step to a historic qualification for the Americup 2022 against Argentina. In the qualifying rounds, the tricolor had lost one match with Argentina, two with Venezuela and another with Chile, which also won a match.
For this edition, Brazil will be the host team of the Americup, a squad that will share group A with Canada, Colombia and Uruguay; group B will include Argentina, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic; and group C will include the United States, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela.
Now, it should be borne in mind that, so far, Colombia's payroll is in doubt, since, in principle, two of its referents, Jaime Echenique has commitments in the NBA G-League that could compromise his participation in the Americup, and Brian Angola has not returned to basketball after he was discovered with myocarditis in the late last year.
Regarding the latter, the Colombian, through a message on his Twitter account, clarified that myocarditis is due to his spread of COVID-19 and not to heart problems. Despite the fact that the player is well, the discomfort forced him to suspend the sporting activity.
“It is an inflammation in the heart resulting from the contagion of covid-19, common in this disease”, triado Angola. Now, with this medical condition, the future of the Colombian is uncertain, because he will have to undergo treatment to prevent the inflammation from passing to adults.
On the other hand, the Nilson Nelson Gymnasium (Brasilia) and Geraldo Magalhães Sports Gymnasium (Recife) will be the two stages that will receive the Americup 2022. From the quarterfinals, Recife will be the only venue for the competition.
This is how the duels will be played in the Americup 2022:
Game 19: Best 1st Place vs. Second Best 3rd Place
Game 20: Second Best 1st Place vs. Best 3rd Place
Game 21:1st Place Remaining vs. Lowest 2nd Place
Game 22: Best 2nd Place vs. Second Best 2nd Place
In the Final Stage, which will take place in Recife, the winners of the quarterfinals will advance to the semifinals:
