The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) released the February 2022 National Employment and Employment Survey, which revealed that the Economically Active Population (EAP) was 58.2 million people, which implied a participation rate of 58.7% and means that this population number is 3 million higher than that of February 2021.
On the other hand, Inegi detailed that the Non-Economically Active Population (PNEA) was 41 million people, which means 1.1 million people less than in February 2021. Within it, the available PNEA decreased by 594 thousand
Of the Economically Active Population, 56.1 million people (96.3%) were employed last February, 3.3 million more than in the same month of the previous year.
According to their position, 67.7% are subordinate and paid workers, 22.8% are self-employed, 5.4% are employers and 4.1% are unpaid employees.
Inside, the survey indicates that underemployed people, that is, those who declared that they have the need and availability to work longer hours, were 5.2 million (9.2% of the employed population), a reduction of 2.1 million people compared to February 2021.
While unemployment in Mexico stood at 2.2 million people, which is 249 thousand people less than the figure recorded in February 2021.
Inegi reported that in February 2022, the Unemployment Rate (TD) or unemployment was 3.7% of the Economically Active Population (EAP), which means a decrease of 0.7% compared to February of the previous year.
The Institute detailed that during the month of February, unemployed men totaled 1.3 million, while the number of unemployed women remained at 0.9 million people; therefore, the unemployment rate for men was set at 3.7% and for women at 3.8%.
Among the people who do not have jobs, it was observed that people who are in the range of 25 to 44 years of age are the most affected, since it concentrated 45.9% of the unemployment rate, 1.3 percentage points higher than that of the same month a year earlier.
While the 15-24 age group incorporated 28.7% of the unemployed, 4.5 percentage points below that reported a year earlier, and the 45-64 age group grouped 23.3%, an increase of 2.7 percentage points.
Another fact that Inegi highlights is that in February of this year, 17.9% of unemployed people sought employment for more than 3 months; while 33.9% remained unemployed for more than 1 month and up to 3 months. While 42.7% remained looking for a job for up to 1 month.
