There will be counterflow on Las Américas Avenue in Bogotá, learn how and from when will the measure go

The decision of the District's Mobility Secretariat seeks to improve the traffic of vehicles moving in the southwest of the city

The District Secretariat for Mobility will take measures to improve mobility at certain hours of the morning for users of the Av de las Américas road corridor who tend to get stuck in long lines of cars.

The fact is that traffic in Bogotá is usually congested thanks to the number of cars in the city. According to figures from the Single National Transit Registry, RUNT, Colombia recorded a total of 17,020,000 as of February 2022, of which just over 6 million represent light cars, dump trucks and buses, a small number representing cargo and towing vehicles with more than 160,000 in the country.

While more than 10 million motorcycles are part of Colombia's vehicle fleet, being the leading transport for citizens. As for Bogotá, most of the cars in the country move in the capital, with more than 2,500,000 the figure given by the RUNT, a similar case is read with motorcycles which exceed 500,000.

This has helped to make the possibility of moving around the city chaotic in some main avenues such as the North Highway, the Southern Highway, Av 68, Av Boyacá, among others. These are martyrdom for thousands of citizens of the capital who seek to go to their jobs, universities and errands in their cars.

However, although the peak and plate that was implemented for 2022 by the Mayor's Office of Bogotá, for many had a good result, some measures such as allowing the mobility of cars on pick and plate through the provision of a permit that exonerates drivers from a penalty if they carry three or more passengers during the route previously announced by the Mobility page.

This, of course, contributes to more cars driving than is thought on the streets of the city. Still, there are other causes that do not help much to make the traffic flow fast and are the works that are carried out at different points and that usually reduce at least one lane for cars.

In the case of Avenida de las Américas, where no works are carried out, it should be clarified that there are nearby, for example on Avenida Ciudad de Cali, on Av 68 as well as 1 de Mayo, which makes the Americas a main corridor for drivers from Kennedy, Patio Bonito and other nearby sectors.

The measure announced by the District Secretariat for Mobility and which will take effect on April 6, will run from Monday to Friday from 6:00am to 9:00am and will be done only in the west-east direction from race 74, near the Transmilenio de Banderas Portal, to the renowned Outlets de las Americas shopping area, 3 kilometers in total.

Only light cars, vans and camperos will be able to travel in counterflow there. Motorcycles, bicycles and bicycle taxis are restricted in passage. The approval of the northern road of Av de las Américas will have all the logistical personnel who will guide traffic day by day.

In addition, once they reach the Outlets, drivers will have two options: to resume their way through the Americas by joining the lanes that go from west to east or turn left to look for Calle 13.
