The day Will Smith mocked a person with alopecia on camera

It happened on a television show in the early 90s. The video was now rescued by many who accuse the actor of “hypocrisy” for the blow he inflicted on Chris Rock at the Oscar ceremony

The internet does not forget, and since Sunday with the most controversial awards ceremony in recent years it has been boiling with memes, comments and videos on the subject of the moment, the slap of Will Smith to Chris Rock in the face at the Oscars ceremony.

The awkward moment happened in the middle of the live broadcast after Rock made a joke from the stage about Smith's wife, alluding that her lack of hair would make her perfect protagonist in the film G.I. Jane 2, whose main role is played by a shaved woman.

Smith laughed at the joke at first, but realizing that his wife didn't take it at all well, he rushed to the stage and slapped a surprised Chris Rock who tried to handle the situation, while the actor, again in his seat, yelled angrily: “Take my wife's name out of your damn mouth.”

What happened surprised everyone, and there were even people online who thought that the exchange was part of some joke typical of these awards shows. But nothing could be further from the truth because apparently the original joke, from Rock to Jada Pinkett Smith, struck a chord with the actress and her husband, the medical condition of alopecia that causes her an involuntary loss of her hair.

As is usual in these controversial cases, the internet split in two, with part of the people condemning Will Smith's performance and the other justifying the defense of his wife's honor.

Who is right is something that will depend on the judgment of each one, but one side is making viral a video that adds fuel to the fire and seeks to describe the actor's behavior as “hypocritical”, who at the same gala where he assaulted his colleague won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams in the film King Richard .

The clip shows a young Smith, apparently in his time as “The Prince of Rap”, in which he mainly identified himself as a comedian, making a joke at the cost of a person's baldness and minimizing the offended reaction of the public with a simple: “Oh, please, these are jokes”.

The incident occurred on The Arsenio Hall Show in 1991, when Smith is talking about “the bald ones”. So he points to bassist John Williams and says that he like every bald guy has rules, and his rule is that he has to shave his head every day. A joke that gave the audience a somewhat uncomfortable laugh.

“They're jokes,” responds comedian Smith.

The video of the joke was shared with a message pointing to the actor's alleged hypocrisy by being offended by a joke about something he himself has played with in the past.

“Now, this is a video of Will Smith telling a joke about someone with alopecia. One of the reasons why I love the Internet is never forgotten,” wrote one of the netizens who shared the video on Twitter.

The reactions to the trill were not long in coming.

“See hypocrisy at its best,” one response said, while another wrote: “He was fine joking about someone else... but he couldn't handle it when the joke concerned his family. That joke wasn't bad either.”

A third went on to say, “This is worse than GI Jane's joke, in my opinion.”

However, others were quick to defend fellow singer and creator of hits like Gettin' Jiggy wit It, and criticizing the original tweet: “You are by no means trying to equate mocking a bald man with mocking a bald woman.”

Another wrote a passionate response: “So are you really comparing 20-something year old Will to a Chris Rock over 50? There are things I thought it was okay to say when I was young and naive. I know better now, Chris should have known better.”

Since the incident Will Smith apologized for beating Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday and said his behavior was “unacceptable and inexcusable” and left him “ashamed”.

“Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

“My behavior at last night's Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada's medical condition was too much for me and I reacted emotionally,” he continued.

“I'd like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of place and I was wrong. I am ashamed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” concluded the winner for best actor.

Smith also apologized to the show's organizers and producers.

So far there has been no statement by Chris Rock about what happened at the Oscars.
