The Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) on Monday denounced the murder of its militant Juan de Dios Hernández in the state of Apure, bordering Colombia, less than three months after José Urbina, a member of the same formation, was killed in the same area.
“Less than three months after the murder of communist militant José Urbina, a renowned popular communicator in Apure, Comrade Juan de Dios Hernández, social leader of the Party in Puerto Páez, has been kidnapped and murdered,” the secretary general of the political organization, Óscar Figuera, wrote on his Twitter account.
The also deputy of the National Assembly (AN, Parliament) recalled that Hernández and Urbina, killed on January 10, were active in the same cell of the Party and “have been killed in the same town”.
The Party demanded that the Public Prosecutor's Office conduct a “thorough” investigation into the killings of its militants in Apure and demanded a statement by the tax authorities.
“We denounce to national and international public opinion the murder of our cadres without the Public Prosecutor's Office taking a decision or conducting a timely investigation,” said the parliamentarian, who criticized the “institutional silence”.
The incident was also denounced on the same social network by former Chavista deputy Juan Francisco García Escalona, who claimed that Hernández was killed by armed groups operating in the border region.
“I again raise my voice in rejection of the assassination of political leaders in Apure. Juan de Dios Hernández, who was a member of the PCV, was kidnapped and killed by armed groups operating in Puerto Páez, excesses continue on our border. Justice! ”, García Escalona wrote on Twitter.
As in the case of Urbina, it is unknown whether Hernández had received any threats because of his status as a member of the PCV or any other reason.
The PCV had already asked the Prosecutor's Office to investigate the murder of its militant, who also worked as a journalist.
