This Tuesday, March 29, the National Civil Status Registry held the draw to define the conformation of the new card for the upcoming presidential elections in Colombia, which will be held on May 29, and made a series of updates for the voting day.
The national registrar, Alexander Vega, who in recent days received harsh criticism from different political sectors and citizens for the countless inconsistencies that were evident during the legislative elections, announced the new measures that will be adopted for the first presidential round, in which the next one can be defined governor of the country among the eight candidates.
“We are going to make some changes that will favor the pre-count in the country. We released a new E-14 form, which has been enlarged compared to other presidential elections, where it was smaller in size. But the novelty that we are including is the photo of the electoral card, this in order to avoid any mistakes,” said the national registrar during the event.
He also indicated that the data transmitted during election day will be monitored in real time, with the purpose of auditing and controlling the alarms that may be presented “not only so that the jurors correctly include the figures, but that the transmitters can correctly read the transmission.”
Similarly, he pointed out that political campaigns are reviewing the figures that will be used to fill in boxes that are without votes, such as hyphens or asterisks, which have generated different criticisms due to the alleged manipulation that has been denounced on different occasions and that during the past elections generated suspicion on the part of citizens and political sectors that were affected.
“All voting juries are going to vary. We are going to do a new draw, with much more in-depth training and the important thing is that we are going to ensure that no table is homogeneous in the country. These will be heterogeneous and we are going to vary the application sectors, prioritizing that of political parties, which will have the guarantees to nominate their candidates for voting juries,” said the official.
Finally, he indicated that these will be the measures that will be taken to ensure the transparency of the process, which has been questioned by different communities and sectors because of the multiple irregularities that had questioned the legitimacy of the electoral process during the legislative elections that led to the talk of an alleged electoral fraud.
“These are the changes and measures we are going to take to ensure not only the transparency of the process, in the first presidential round, but to avoid problems with the voting juries and transmitters that day. And make an agile pre-count and above all that demonstrates reality at the tables throughout the country,” concluded the registrar.
