Last Sunday, during the 2022 Oscar Awards, Eugenio Derbez took the acclaimed stage of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, after the film CODA: Signs of the Heart won the category as “Best Picture”.

The drama about a deaf family directed by Sian Heder, also won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, managing to beat strong contenders from traditional studios Hollywood.

Faced with this triumph, Omar Chaparro, friend of Eugenio Derbez, extended a congratulation to him and commented on Ventaneando that, from before, he was very sure that the Mexican would be on the stage winner.

“I sent a message to Eugenio on Saturday, I said: 'Are you ready to take the stage yet?... I don't know, but I already see you there. ' E ugenio deserves to be there; I know his work, his effort, I wasn't surprised when he won CODA,” Chaparro commented for the program hosted by Pati Chapoy.

Likewise, the singer of Las Locuras mías declared that, despite not having seen the winning film yet, he was sure that it was a legitimate triumph for Derbez.

I haven't seen CODA the truth, but I felt that he is going to win it because the boys deserve it and Eugenio deserves it,” he said, adding that he hasn't written to him at the moment, because he assumed that the actor must be very busy receiving all kinds of congratulations.

Chaparro added that he too was willing to follow in Eugenio's footsteps and stressed that sometimes you have to leave the “comfort zone” to get to where he has done it.

“These are risks that one has to take. When Eugenio stopped making this film, he stopped making several films where he was paid more. For Eugenio, doing CODA does not represent any economic gain (...) He put on his costumes for his character,” she said.

Regarding these statements, the drivers of Ventaneando also wanted to give their point of view and Daniel Bisogno delved into the fact that everyone was talking about the slap that Will Smith gave Chris Rock, but that the real slap was given by Eugenio when he won a prize of that category.

As for his personal projects, Omar Chaparro talked about his next film And what is he like? where Mauricio Ochmann will also participate.

“We made this film four years ago... we are others and one is changing. They had to paint gray hair on me to look older. It's one of those movies where we take risks because it's not a classic romantic comedy... it touches on the point of infidelity,” he said.

CODA, acronym for the hearing children of deaf parents in the United States, is based on the 2014 French film The Bélier Family, and unlike this one, the Oscar-winning production in the 94th edition of the Oscars does feature actors who have a hearing disability in its cast.

This is a low-budget production that initially appeared at the Sundance festival in 2021, where it won the four main prizes: direction, grand jury prize, audience and best acting ensemble, and then being released in the streaming format. According to official figures, CODA raised 25 million dollars, and according to estimates by specialists, it would have had a budget of 10 million dollars.

“Writing and making this film was a vital challenge as an artist and as a human being. I want to thank all my collaborators in the deaf community, in the 'CODA' community for being my teachers”, was the message of the writer Sian Heder when she received the statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay.
