'I love you Peru' by 'Chorri' Palacios after a goal that left José Luis Chilavert standing

It is 22 years since that meeting where Bicolor beat Paraguay 2-0 for the first date of the 2002 Korea and Japan World Cup Qualifiers. Roberto Palacios left an image for the history of Peruvian football.

Guardar

Shortly after the start of the match between Peru vs. Paraguay, it remains to recall an anecdote that occurred today, March 29 but 22 years ago: the first match of the Bicolor to seek its qualification to the World Cup Korea and Japan 2002. That day, it also happened in Lima but in 2000, where Roberto Palacios would leave an image marked for the history of national football, a polo shirt that said 'I love you, Peru' after scoring a 'chorrigolazo' to Guaraní goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert.

In a match that managed to open after a penalty converted by Nolberto Solano, Peru sought to secure the match against pressure from the Paraguayan team. It was thus that in a stopped ball, 'Ñol' decided to pass to the middle of the field where the 'chorrillano' was, who threatened the Guaraní defenders to make a long-distance shot that left goalkeeper José Chilavert standing.

The celebration came and Palacios took off his shirt to show a red one with white lettering to give an important message: I love you, Peru. This while being carried by his teammates, receiving the ovation of all the public who went to the old National Stadium in Lima to see this work of art.

Thus, the white roja secured the match and achieved her first three points, in qualifiers where you would have high and low — with changes of coaches for the cycle started with Francisco Maturana and closed with Julio César Uribe — achieving an 8th place with 16 points after 4 wins, 4 draws and 10 losses.

For its part, Paraguay would achieve its direct classification after finishing fourth with 30 points (9V, 3E, 6D). At that time it was their second consecutive world championship after being left out in the round of 16 by host France, with a golden goal by defender Laurent Blanc.

ROBERTO PALACIOS TALKED ABOUT THE GOAL

The 'chorri' Roberto Palacios remembered the goal he scored for José Luis Chilavert in 2000 for the South American qualifiers. “It's a nice moment, 22 years since I scored that goal for Chilavert, enjoying it and thanks to RetaBet who gives me the chance to be an ambassador and remember that nice moment,” said the former player for Pulso Sports Peru.

On today's crucial duel, he noted the following: “The boys know how to manage anxiety, they already have experience, if I were a young man you could say yes but they have experience and they know how to handle it. We must give them motivation to give their maximum effort and to leave their soul, heart and life in those 90 minutes in order to achieve the result that gives us the possibility of being in the repechage”.

THE PENALTY SAVED TO CHILAVERT

Taking up what happened in the match against the Guaraníes, the referee claimed a controversial penalty to see Paraguay when the score was 2 to 0. José Luis Chilavert, also an expert in free kicks, decided as captain to be in charge of kicking from the 12 steps. However, it did not have the reflections of national goalkeeper Oscar Ibáñez, who generated the excitement of the Peruvian fans.
