Holy Week in Iztapalapa: this will be the representation of the Passion of Christ

The Head of Government of Mexico City and the Mayor of Iztapalapa announced the return of activities with the public, which were held for two years by the COVID-19 pandemic

The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, and the mayor of Iztapalapa, Clara Brugada Molina, announced that after two years of absence with the public, the representation of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ will return in 2022 during the Easter week.

During the press conference led by the local president, Brugada Molina reported that the representation will be held in a mixed manner, since the Via Crucis will be open to the public; however, the activities of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday will be held without an audience.

Likewise, the mayor of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) said that the decision to receive a public was taken after the weeks in which CDMX was lied to at the green light and the incidence of infections, as well as deaths, has fallen.

However, it was not the only news, since it was also announced that the traditional pilgrimage and the Barro Fair will return, festivities characteristic of the population of Iztapalapa and which were suspended in 2020 and 2021.

“As we are already at a green light, the Nazarenes will also be allowed to participate, who will be able to climb the Cerro de la Estrella, as well as the installation of the pilgrimage tradition and (the) Barro Fair, which is so awaited by the entire population,” explained the head of the demarcation.

In addition, Clara Brugada proudly announced that Sheinbaum Pardo will attend the celebration that is considered to be the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the country's capital.

Finally, the mayor of Iztapalapa indicated that, in coordination with the central administration, a special operation will be implemented in which 2,435 public servants will participate.

The security operation aims to ensure that officials comply with activities such as the closure of roads, controls to restrict pedestrian passage, as well as the confinement of the scenarios.

The servers that will participate are registered with the mayor's office of Iztapalapa, the Auxiliary Police, as well as the Decentralized Prosecutor's Office of the demarcation; in addition to the Attorney General's Office of Justice of Mexico City (FGJCDMX), the Investigative Police of the FGJCDMX, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), the Red Cross, the Corps of Capital firefighters, staff of ERUM and C5.

Some of the information that was given this Tuesday had already been released by the mayor's authorities on March 17, when the working groups with the Holy Week Organizing Committee in Iztapalapa (Cossiac) concluded.

At that press conference, Brugada Molina acknowledged the association's work and understanding in accepting the restrictions that were given for the 2022 edition; however, he acknowledged that the characteristic representation will continue to be carried out in a good way.

“We assume that, despite the fact that the city is at a green light, there are still infections and crowds may lead to a new wave of COVID-19 cases, both in Iztapalapa and in the city. That is why we have taken the decision to have it carried out in a mixed manner,” he concluded.
