The 2022 Oscars seem not to give way to the media scandals that have completely overshadowed the big winners of the night. Now, after the controversy generated by Chris Rock's joke to Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith's wife and which triggered the now famous slap, other of the most uncomfortable moments of the night have been noticed: Amy Schumer calling Kirsten Dunst “fill seats” as part of her sketch.
Kirsten Dunst, or known to Marvel fans as the first Mary Jane Watson in Spiderman, was nominated for best supporting actress, so she attended alongside her husband and Jesse Plemons, nominated for best supporting actor, both for the film The Power of the Dog at the 94th edition of the Oscars that took held this Sunday, March 27.
Both were enjoying the ceremony when host Amy Schumer appeared doing a monologue about people who only attend “filling seats”, one of the interactions that I most disapprove of has generated in the media and social networks as it is another “misplaced joke” that stains the reputation of the Academy and could have consequences for its next edition.
“I will explain to them what the filling seats do. Here we have one (referring to Kirsten Dunst), can you get up and go to the bathroom, honey?” , said Schumer as he held Kirsten's hand to lift it up and sit next to Jesse Plemnons.
As incredible as it may seem and thinking that this uncomfortable situation could not be worse, the comedian assured that it was not right to be married to a stuffed seats as soon as the actor told her that if she did not understand that they were together since marriage shared a nomination as well as a good story of “love”. The following statement was another reason for outrage on social media:
“Did you know that's my wife? ” Plemnons replied with a face of confusion and discomfort, to which the comedian replied wryly: “Are you married to that stuffed seats? Oh, that's weird”, causing no laughter among the long list of guests who again didn't understand what was really going on between the brief appearance that was intended to serve as an intro to the next category to be revealed.
Although the comedian's advocates said that everything could have been unexpected because the introduction of the sketch did not mention names or personal topics: “Okay, it takes 27,000 people to present the Oscars and each work is equally important. All right, the gaffers. The people in the camera. The seat fillers. Everybody, okay. So, what do seat fillers do. I hear that they fill the seats, I'll just explain to them what they do,” said the comedian.
After the onslaught of criticism against her, Amy Schumer assured fans that Kirsten Dunst that the actress was aware of the joke, so at no time did she intend to do her or her husband's work less, as well as intervene in the romantic relationship maintained by the 2022 Oscar nominees.
Through her Instagram stories, the 40-year-old comedian wrote: “Hi, I appreciate the love for Kirsten Dunst. I love her too! That was a choreographed part that she was aware of. I wouldn't disrespect that queen like that.”
On social networks fans of the seventh art have started a petition for comedians to stop making jokes at the awards ceremonies, so they would be looking for other types of people to lead the drivers' baton.
