Alejandro Gertz Manero, head of the Attorney General's Office (FGR), has been under the spotlight recently. Just last Monday, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) ordered the immediate release of Alejandra Cuevas, who was imprisoned in the Santa Martha Acatitla prison for 528 days, allegedly responsible for the death of Federico Gertz Manero, brother of the Attorney General.
It was shortly after 16:00 hours that the woman was released. After this, Cuevas asked to be received by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), to ask for protection for her, her mother and her children.
In 2015, Alejandro Gertz Manero reported to the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City (FGJCDMX) the murder of his brother Federico, due to an alleged lack of care of his then partner Laura Morán, and her daughter, Alejandra Cuevas, which is why his health would have deteriorated until his death. The case was reactivated in 2019, when Gertz Manero was already in charge of the FGR, and the head of FGJCDMX was already Ernestina Godoy. Until then, the lawsuit proceeded and the woman was locked up.
On Monday afternoon, the SCJN unanimously ordered the cancellation of the arrest warrant issued against Laura Morán, 98, mother of Alejandra Cuevas and also accused of allegedly responsible for the intentional homicide of Federico Gertz Manero. Such a sentence includes the effect of canceling the criminal proceedings against him.
However, this is not the only scandal that has followed the Attorney General, as he has also been involved in matters related to the great fortune and the luxurious properties and cars that have been discovered in various journalistic investigations.
Just last March 16, the newspaper El País released a journalistic investigation, in which it is reported that Gertz Manero owns four luxury homes in Spain, with a value of more than five million euros, or 113 million Mexican pesos. The FGR holder's assets include a flat in his name in the Los Jerónimos neighborhood, the most expensive and central area of Madrid, and three three-story apartments in Ibiza, which he controls through a real estate company he owns.
The homes it has in Ibiza are rented on Airbnb, for more than 6,500 pesos per night.
However, these are not the only luxury properties that the attorney general has, as he owns other properties in other of the most exclusive cities in the world, such as New York and Paris. In October 2021, journalist Mario Maldonado announced that Gertz Manero owns a luxurious apartment on Avenida Foch, in Paris, which is located at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe. According to the journalist's sources, this apartment at number 52 on the avenue costs approximately 45 million pesos.
In December of last year, two properties of the FGR holder were also exhibited in New York and Santa Monica, United States. One of these buildings, owned by Gertz Manero, is located in an Art Deco building on 5th Avenue, overlooking Central Park. According to information released by Univision, until December its value was about 60 million pesos.
The building located in Santa Monica by the official, would have cost 1.1 million dollars, or about 22 million pesos at the current exchange rate, in 2007, when he served as President of the Mexican Federation of Higher Education Institutions.
However, the prosecutor has not only been involved in real estate scandals, he has also been involved in luxury car purchases.
In December 2021, it was announced that, according to data from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), between 2014 and 2015, the Attorney General purchased 122 luxury cars, for the amount of 109 million 775 thousand 339 million pesos. Mostly, the cars were Mercedes Benz, and in a relevant way, a Rolls Royce.
In addition, in their scandals there are also some international transfers for large amounts of money, for example, 4,319,755 pesos that were destined for Mercedes Gertz in a Wells Fargo account in the United States. In addition, in 2013, he transferred 103 thousand euros to Spain. In the same period, he received $4 million from a Bank of America account and $37,858 from the University of the Americas, among others, according to the FIU.
