Accident of a tourist bus in via Cienaga - Barranquilla leaves at least 22 injured

In the last few hours, there was a major traffic accident involving a tractomobile and a passenger bus traveling along the road that connects Ciénaga with Barranquilla. The vehicle, registered by the Berlinas company, which covered the Santa Marta - Barranquilla route, ended up overturned on one side of the road. The driver tried to avoid the tractomule that invaded the lane, but ended up losing control of the bus.

The WFI 8670 license plate vehicle resulted in 22 people injured who were subsequently treated by medical personnel at the same site of the accident, since with the exception of a few, almost no one had serious injuries. A few were transferred to clinics in Barranquilla.

Among those affected were seven travelers from Bogotá who were staying at a hotel in Santa Marta and had paid for their ticket to Cartagena. The exact figure of the injured has not yet been officially confirmed by the authorities and, according to Darío Mosquera, who was acting as a guide for the group of travelers, the accident occurred this morning, due to the recklessness of the driver of a vehicle that stopped dry, wanting to anticipate another, which forced the bus driver to do what himself and, not being able to slow down, ended up hitting a tractomule ahead.

Mobility in this corridor is currently partially paralyzed. The Police are present on site and professionals evaluate the condition of the vehicles. “Thank God there were no fatalities or injuries, but the fright was great,” said guide Mosquera.

A similar situation occurred at kilometer 19 of the same track. A minivan, also from the Berlinas company, with SYS 118 plates, heading towards the department of Bolívar, from Magdalena, deviated from the road and ended up in a mangrove forest that contained the vehicle. There was only some damage to the façade of the same and the passengers were not injured. So far in 2022, according to reports from the National Road Safety Observatory, despite the statistics of accidents on the country's roads, these have decreased compared to previous months, although accidents continue to leave a high number of fatalities.

Reports indicate that the number of vehicle drivers who died during an accident that occurred in 2022 is increasing, from 114 deaths in 2020 and 97 in 2021 to 139 so far this year. In total, according to the National Road Safety Agency, the departments where there has been the most reported increase in the number of people killed in road accidents so far in 2022 are: Valle del Cauca (24), Meta (24) and Antioquia (16).

According to the statistics shown, January remains the month with the most deaths on the way. About 571 fatalities were recorded, of which 314 were motorcyclists, 123 were pedestrians, 71 were private vehicle users and 22 were cyclists.
