After former President César Gaviria, also the director of the Liberal Party, announced that he will no longer make alliances with the Historical Pact, the senator-elector of that coalition, Roy Barreras, announced that he would request an appointment with him to restore relations for the first presidential round.
This was said by the congressman during the morning of Thursday, March 24, in a press conference, attended by the vice-presidential candidate Francia Márquez and the entire legislative bench of the Historical Pact.
After a few days of insisting, his request came to fruition and sources from the Liberal Party confirmed to W Radio that this March 28 the two politicians will meet once again in order to restore relations between the two sectors and to be able to win more votes for the candidacy of Gustavo Petro and his Francia Márquez formula for the presidential.
“Progressivism in Colombia, since the 19th century, has been liberalism. The history of liberal ideas make a perfect marriage to the Historical Covenant. I am very optimistic, President César Gaviria, who represents that story and is also the leader of the Constitution of 91, will undoubtedly have a respectful interlocution in us,” said the senator-elect of the leftist movement at the time.
Let us remember that Barreras has been a strong defender of Cesar Gaviria, because after the former president pointed out that he was breaking relations with the Covenant due to statements that Francia Márquez had made claiming that he represents neoliberalism, he wrote on his social networks that the allegations against former President Gaviria are a “error”, and alluded to the lack of experience that Francia Márquez would have in “building unity” with different political sectors in Colombia.
“Former President Cesar Gaviria is the manager of the 91 Constitution that @PactoCol must defend. It accompanied the Peace Agreement without sprain. To offend him is a mistake. I hope you understand that not everyone has experience in building unity,” the senator wrote on his Twitter.
Liberal Party breaks dialogues with the Historical Pact
On March 23, the president of the Liberal Party issued a statement stating that a dialogue with Gustavo Petro's Historical Pact is “unfeasible”. According to the document “” the politics of hatred, anger and meanness do not go with the Liberal Party”.
“The main reason for my meeting with Mr. Petro on the eve of the electoral contest was to inform the candidate that I was totally adverse to the expressions of some political leaders that candidate Petro had to be stopped. I told him that a debate with the Liberal Party would be respectful and free of personal offenses and it seemed to me that he shared it,” Gaviria said in the text.
In the document, Gaviria assures that he had warned Petro that Francia Márquez should not refer to him again in unbinding terms.
“This is the second time that in recent days Mrs. Márquez has expressed herself in those terms and I informed the candidate that this could not be repeated. Apparently they didn't care about my demonstrations. Yesterday I had conversations with the two benches to prepare to have talks with the candidates. As long as I am president of the Liberal Party, I end some conversations that I planned to have with that political sector.”
Finally, the head of the Liberal Party assured that the Historical Pact has incendiary language and said that it could lead the country to more violence.
“I am very sorry that the historical pact thinks that its incendiary language is something that we Colombians can celebrate. I hope that our country does not expect that language and attitude that will lead to more violence and total confrontation between its economic, social and political forces,” says the former president's communication.
