Gentleman Jack will return with a second season of eight episodes on April 10, on HBO Max. To prepare the audience, the series directed by Sally Wainwright (Last Tango in Halifax and Happy Valley) presented a trailer. The production recreates the story of Anne Lister, a woman who married another woman in the 19th century and against all prejudices, based on a real fact.

Lister was a very unusual person for his time: intellectual, landowner, industrialist, interested in medicine. In the series she is played by Suranne Jones, the actress who starred in Doctor Foster with Jodie Comer. Jones is joined in the cast by Sophie Rundle (Bodyguard, Peaky Blinders) as Lister's partner, Ann Walker.

This new season will be set around 1834 in the town of Yorkshire, where Lister and Walker moved together to Shibden Hall, Lister's family home. The neighbors live their arrival with great apprehension, since the lives of these women, unconventional for the canons of the time, make it seem provocative.

Lister's intimate diaries — numerous volumes, mostly written in code, to hide that they told romances between women — will once again be the basis of this story, as in the first season. A common resource in the series is to show the protagonist talking to the camera about her thoughts, which makes it easier to quote directly from the newspapers.

At the premiere of the first season, in 2019, Infobae had the opportunity to interview the director and the protagonists: “Anne is an unusual character, which we didn't see before on television,” said Wainwright, who also created and produced the series. “My goal is for people to be entertained and surprised, and that they receive their optimistic view of the world.”

Gemma Whelan, Gemma Jones and Timothy West are once again part of this fiction, along with Jodhi May, Katherine Kelly, Derek Riddell, Stephanie Cole, Peter Davison, Amelia Bullmore, Vincent Franklin, Shaun Dooley, Rosie Cavaliero, Joe Armstrong, Anthony Flanagan and George Costigan. As Isabel Tib Norcliffe, a former lover of Lister, Joanna Scanlan will join.
