Oscar 2022: This is how they reacted in Colombia to the statuette that won 'Encanto'

President Iván Duque, politicians and journalists sent a message for the prize that won the film based in Colombia

On Sunday night, 'Encanto', the Colombian-inspired animated film, managed to win its first statuette at the Oscar Awards gala in the category for Best Animated Film. The Disney feature was competing against 'The Mitchel Family vs. The Machines', 'Flee', 'Raya and the Last Dragon' and 'Luca'.

The statuette was presented after Colombian singer Sebastián Yatra performed 'Dos Oruguitas' at the gala, which is one of the film's signature songs and which is also competing for an award in the Best Original Song category.

The news has generated various reactions. Among the most outstanding is that of the President of the Republic, Iván Duque, who was proud of the prize that the film received.

“It fills us with pride that the film Encanto, inspired by the cultural and natural wealth of our country, is recognized as the best animated film at the Oscars. This is undoubtedly an invitation to the world to discover the magic of Colombia,” the Colombian president wrote on his Twitter account.

The president's message was joined by the Minister of Culture, Angelica Robayo. “What happiness! #Encanto, a film inspired by our country, wins the #Oscars Award for Best Animated Film - commented the official on the same social network. A story that highlights our great cultural diversity, identity and tradition. What a pride! Congratulations to the fantastic team that made it possible.”

The U.S. Embassy in Bogotá also congratulated Colombia for the recognition they received at the gala.

In turn, politicians and public figures commented on it and congratulated Colombia on its triumph. One of them was Gustavo Petro, current candidate for the President of the Republic, who assured that the statuette, “announces the hour of magic”.

The newly elected senator and former governor of Casanare, Alirio Barrera, said: “Hey! How cool is that Disney's #Encanto won an Oscar for best animated film of the year. The idea is to show the most beautiful thing that comes out of our country, we must return to the front pages of the world talking about security, trust! Good for the Madrigal family.”

Meanwhile, Chamber Representative Catalina Ortiz Lalinde said she was full of happiness for the award and congratulated the Colombian singers who made their debut at the gala. “The name of Colombia was definitely up tonight,” he added in a Twitter thread.

For their part, renowned journalists Felix de Bedout and Vanessa de la Torre also provided a message about this, highlighting Sebastián Yatra's performance along with the new opportunities that Colombian artists are opening up with the award.
