Luis Fernando Suárez, who took office as Costa Rica's technical director in June 2021 with the aim of changing his bad course in the Concacaf qualifiers, today has the national team on half foot at the 2022 Qatar Football World Cup. And on March 28, he talked about what is considered a feat in Central America.
The team is now fourth in the qualifiers thanks to the rally under the baton of the Colombian DT: they won five and tied one of the last six matches. And, if he defeats the United States on the last day by a rout and Mexico falls in his confrontation with El Salvador, he would get a direct spot in the contest.
If this does not happen, Costa Rica will play the playoff against the winner of the final of the OFC (Oceanian Football Confederation) qualifiers, scheduled next Wednesday, in New Zealand and Solomon Islands. The truth is that Suarez repaid the confidence of the team he reached while he was a sports commentator on Win Sports and after a stint at Atletico Bucaramanga.
On the key to the dream moment that the national team he leads is experiencing, Suárez argued that he obeyed the work done with local players, who were given the opportunity to represent the country, after some microcycles in which he had the contribution of the clubs. At RCN Mund, the helmsman commented:
Luis Fernando Suárez, who won the pulse of other well-known strategists to win the position of DT of Costa Rica, such as Rafael Dudamel — former Venezuela coach, today coach of Deportivo Cali — and Alexandre Guimarães — champion with America de Cali in 2019 — also asked for greater recognition for the Colombian technical directors, like him: he took the World Cup to Honduras and Ecuador and is close to doing so with Costa Rica.
“The Colombian coach has not been recognized for the job, all the critical situations are fair, it is normal for this to exist, but the fact that there is no recognition of the Colombian coach after everything he has achieved not only at the country level but at the international level, is not fair,” he said in the media television.
One of the Central American teams led by the former footballer was Honduras. Suarez qualified this team for the 2014 Brazil World Cup, ranking third in Concacaf. The first to lead this team to a world championship event was today Colombia's coach, Reinaldo Rueda.
Before stopping in Costa Rica, the one born in Medellín sounded, at some point, as coach of the tricolor team after the departure of Carlos Queiroz. He was also related as a possible coach of America de Cali, to which Juan Carlos Osorio finally arrived, when Juan Cruz Real stepped aside. Will they consider it at any time for the Colombia national team?
