The 2022 Oscars were affected by the biggest scandal in its 94-year history when renowned actor Will Smith took to the main stage to stop Chris Rock's stand up and slap him in the eyes of the world for making a joke about his wife's hair minutes before the at which time he won the statuette for best actor.
During his winning speech, Smith was excited and admitted that “love makes you do crazy things”, but ultimately he didn't apologize to Rock for his actions. The apology was addressed to the Academy and its fellow nominees. Rock confirmed to him by the LAPD that he will not press charges for the unexpected assault.
Will's collapse continued for a few short seconds when he returned to his seat as he repeatedly shouted, “Keep my wife's name out of your damn mouth.” Then, the crowd fell into a stunned silence when it became clear that the attack was genuine and out of the art. Chris Rock responded by saying, “I'm going to do it, okay?” And the historic scene closed: “That was the best night in television history.”
The live broadcast of the show was delayed by a few seconds for the United States and the production took advantage of those precious seconds to silence Smith's bad words. From the comfort of his home youtuber turned boxer Jake Paul, who is undefeated in five professional fights, quickly reacted to the controversy with a meme that a fan made for him. “It can't be. This is crazy, haha”, he wrote.
A few minutes later, he returned to the charge with an offer for the protagonists of the night at the Oscars to officially face each other over a ring: “I have 15 million dollars for Will Smith and another 15 million for Chris Rock ready to start. Let's do it in August on my billboard.” Although it seemed like a joke at first, Paul returned to the charge with a public consultation for his four million followers. “Someone call me on the phone with Will Smith's boxing representative as soon as possible,” he asked his audience.
It is worth remembering that Jake last fought in December 2021 when he knocked out former champion Tyron Woodley by knockout in the sixth round. The influencer is aiming for a sixth professional fight in five months, although it is not known who it will be against. Besides, Paul wasn't the only person in sports who gave his reaction. UFC President Dana White wrote: “At last there is an Oscars show worth watching! Chris Rock has stamina on that chin.”
