The art exhibition “Escape from earth”, which brings together several artists, both national and international, arrives at the SKETCH gallery, which opened during the last San Felipe Open and will be open until April 26, closing ArtBo Weekend, in Bogotá.
The exhibition of the gallery, located in the San Felipe art district, has a meeting space for six artists who, with different techniques, converge in an exhibition that takes as a starting point the digital landscape we expose ourselves to on a daily basis.
These six artists are: Sofía Reyes, Ana Fino, Daniela Torres, Tomás Bermudez, Sergio Pinzón and Wilmer Rodríguez, who involve practices such as “superimposing, removing, stirring and editing layers of meaning to the idea of landscape overflowing and escaping traditional representation,” according to information in the press release.
In the presentation of the exhibition it can be read that: “Landscaping is the practice of layering different substrates, materials, plants, trees and stones to achieve a picturesque effect or image of a place; like other forms of art such as painting or drawing, this practice is sometimes done with the intention of imitating other places and sometimes with the intention of opening up a new universe”.
On the other hand, “Escape from earth” was created by Rafael Díaz, curator of this exhibition and leader of the self-managed space Beyond. According to the gallery director, Liz Caballero, it was thanks to Díaz that this artistic exhibition could be made because they had to move the one that was already scheduled due to health problems of the exhibiting artist. Caballero says that he had already collaborated with Díaz on another project and that this exhibition is a sign of resistance and cronyism.
“The idea was to give it space to show a collective of emerging art, a kind of census or diagnosis of the current interests of centennials to call it in some way,” he said. These interests are reflected in the digital world to which we have access and how, through screens, new realities and new landscapes are constantly being created that “Escape from Earth” brings to life.
In addition, the director of SKETCH explained that this exhibition “involves superimposing, removing, stirring and editing layers of meaning to the idea of landscape overflowing and escaping traditional representation. Most of these processes have as their starting point our most everyday landscape, the one we see through the windows of our screens and its subsequent materialization.”, according to the curatorial text.
“Working with beyond was an opportunity to collaborate with other managers who work differently, could bring other artists to the SKETCH program “and refresh their eyes,” said Liz Caballero.
He added that: “Although everyone approached the subject of landscape from different places, their ways of doing, their looks or their ways of looking very similar. Escape from earth is a word game, this thing about being able to escape from the earth, dematerializing its what to do from or through the screens. He was thinking about the idea of landscaping where artificial landscapes are built just as the artists do in the show.”
