In Bogotá, several road works are being carried out that will help improve traffic in the city. One of those under construction is Boyacá Avenue, which is the only corridor that completely crosses from south to north to Bogotá. In this area, more than 11,000 vehicles travel at peak time, including private individuals, buses and tractomules.

Given the need to guarantee the arrival of drinking water, the Bogotá Aqueduct and Sewerage Company (EAAB) is building the Tibitoc Water Treatment Plant, the objective is to repower it, increasing its reliable water treatment capacity from 7.5 cubic meters per second to 10.5 cubic meters per second.

In addition, it will provide permanent water to more than 3 million people living in the west and southwest, favoring the towns of Engativa, Fontibon, Kennedy, Bosa and the lower part of Ciudad Bolivar, as well as Funza, Madrid, Mosquera and the industrial area of Cota.

It is noteworthy that this project seeks to reduce the vulnerability of the supply system, ensure reliability of supply and structurally improve the existing infrastructure.

“The Tibitoc-Casablanca Line runs from the Tibitoc Drinking Water Treatment Plant, in Tocancipá, to the Casa Blanca tank in Ciudad Bolivar. 53 km of pipeline for the water supply of citizens,” explained the aqueduct company.

They added that “this great line is the main water distribution network in the southwest of Bogotá and from the EAAB we are modernizing it with the installation of valves, fittings and new pipes that will improve service for citizens.”

The first phase of the project consists of the rehabilitation of the current Tibitoc-Casablanca pipeline in the southern subsection between Boyacá-crossing Avenida El Ferrocarril (39th Street A south) and the Casablanca Tank, with a length of about 4.0 km and an estimated cost for the work of 60 billion pesos.

In the second phase, a parallel pipe with a diameter of 60 inches will be built and installed using trenchless technology throughout Boyacá Avenue, between 80th and 39th Street south, for a length of about 12.4 km and an estimated cost of 308 billion pesos. And in the final stage, the current Tibitoc-Casablanca pipeline will be rehabilitated in the sector between Avenida Boyacá and Calle 80 to Calle 39 A Sur, over a length of 12.4 km, and an estimated cost of 150 billion pesos.

It is noteworthy that with this project they will implement a 78-inch diameter pipe through which the liquid is transported to three million inhabitants of the city.

“The new mega-pipeline installed on the Tibitoc-Casablanca line (south sector) is 7.20 meters long and weighs 70 tons. For its installation, it was necessary to carry out an excavation of 8.5 meters long by 4.5 meters wide,” explained the Bogotá aqueduct.

He added that “to guarantee the supply of drinking water to the citizens of southwestern Bogotá for the next 50 years. To reduce vulnerability in the city's main drinking water network.”

The company said that for the installation of the pipeline in the Perdomo neighborhood, in Ciudad Bolivar (southern section), they use a vehicle similar to a golf cart that pushes the tube through a conveyor beam to insert it into the old network.
