On the night of this Sunday, March 27, the 94th Oscar Awards will be held, where great personalities from the film industry will appear on the carpet of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. However, despite having an undoubted talent, not everyone will be able to go home with a statuette in hand.

Throughout its history actors, actresses, screenwriters, makeup artists, designers, producers and directors have managed to appear on the list of nominees, but not all of them have been fortunate enough to be awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As on this occasion, in years ago, among the nominees, the names of some Mexicans who have failed to take a statuette have been highlighted among the nominees. However, some have been consecrated as the winners some time later.

The native of Mexico City has been nominated on several occasions, but not all of them have won. This was the case in 2001, where it contended in the categories for Best Foreign Film with its first film Amores Perros, a film that starred actor Gael García Bernal. Subsequently, in 2006 it was placed among the candidates for Best Film and Best Director with Babel. Four years later, in 2010, he appeared among the possible winners in the same category as his debut work, but this time with Biutiful.

2015 was the year in which he was crowned with three statuettes for Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay with Birdman (or the unexpected virtue of ignorance). In 2016, it was also awarded Best Director, however, The Revenant, starring Leonardo Di Caprio, could not be positioned as Best Film.

Despite her long career and undoubted talent, Salma Hayek has not been awarded by the Academy.

Under the direction of Julie Taymor and accompanied by actor Alfred Molina, the Veracruz was nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Frida (2002), a film in which she gave life to the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

Although he did not have an acting training, director Alfonso Cuarón decided to give him the lead role in what is considered, according to his statements, his most intimate film. Before Rome, Yalitza was a preschool teacher, however, her performance placed her among the nominees for Best Actress at the 2019 awards.

That same year, for that same film, Marina de Tavira competed for the statuette in the category for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Sofia, but, like Aparicio, she returned to Mexico without it.

Under the category for Best Photography, El Chivo, as he is known to his friends and in the film medium, appeared for the first time among the possible winners in 1996 for The Little Princess, directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Later, in 2000 by Sleepy Hollow, under the command of Tim Burton. In 2006 by Terrence Malick's The New World. A year later, he was nominated for Children of Men. It was in 2012 the last award in which Lubezky contended for the statuette and did not take it away, with the film The Tree of Life.

His next nominations for his work in Gravity, Birdman and The Revenant won him the Oscars.

Despite his undeniable success, Alfonso Cuarón was not always among the winners. In 2003 he competed for the Best Original Screenplay award with Y Tú Mama Too, but his film did not convince the members of the Academy. With Children of Men, in 2007, he positioned himself as one of the possible winners under the categories for Best Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay.

2014 was the year in which Cuarón's career took a different path, taking the statuettes for Best Director and Best Editing for Gravity, however, it did not take the Best Film Award.

On the other hand, Rome was his most awarded film. Cuarón was awarded Best Director, Best Foreign Film and Best Cinematography, but did not win the nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film.

During the 79th awards ceremony, Guillermo del Toro was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Film with The Labyrinth of the Faun, but the monsters of Jalisco did not convince the jury.

It was until 2018 when the name of the Mexican director appeared again among the possible winners; La Forma del Agua was the film with which Del Toro won its first statuettes for Best Director and Best Film. However, one of the three nominations did not win it. The jaliscian's hands were left waiting for the Best Original Screenplay award.

This 2022 will contain to win the Best Film award for his most recent work The Alley of Lost Souls.
