Javier Villa Stein, lawyer and president of the judiciary from 2009-2010, was defeated by César Humberto Bazán Naveda, who was eventually elected as dean of the Lima Bar Association (CAL), following the elections held the previous day in that institution.

At 100% of the vote count, the notary Bazán Naveda won 15,520 votes in a tight election, while his rival, Villa Stein, won 14,211 votes

María Elena Portocarrero, current dean, congratulated Bazán Naveda on his election and wished him success in his administration. Bazán will serve as dean in the period 2022 - 2023.

Bazán beat lawyer Villa Stein, in a second round vote that took place at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM).

BUMPY ELECTIONS

It should be noted that last Thursday, Javier Villa Stein claimed, through his Twitter account, that he had been assaulted a day earlier outside the Lima Bar Association, located in Miraflores.

In a video, he indicated that the physical and verbal attacks occurred while he was on his way to the union headquarters to discuss with Cesar Bazán, as part of the election of the new dean.

In addition, this Sunday the official count of the second round of elections of the Lima Bar Association (CAL) was interrupted for a moment due to a protest by the radical group known as The Resistance.

Attorney Augusto Medina Otazu, a member of the tuition, said that this group of people was also seen in the vicinity of gate No. 3 of UNMSM. The presence of these people stopped the counting, as they prevented the CAL Elections Committee from continuing its work.

VILLA STEIN STANCES

It should be noted that in June 2021, Javier Villa Stein filed a lawsuit against the National Jury of Elections (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) requesting that the 2021 runoff election round of elections that gave Pedro Castillo as the winner be declared null and void. However, the Second Transitional Constitutional Court of the Superior Court of Justice of Lima declared inadmissible.

Months earlier, in March, Rafael López Aliaga, who was a candidate for the presidential elections, presented the technical team that would support his government proposal, including Javier Villa Stein.

In addition, in December 2020 Villa Stein had declined from his nomination to Parliament by the Popular Renewal party for strictly personal and family reasons” and wished Rafael López Aliaga success, who did not make it to the second round.

COMPLIMENTS FROM DINA BOLUARTE

This Sunday, Vice President and Minister of Development and Social Inclusion, Dina Boluarte, congratulated the election of César Bazán as the new dean of the Lima Bar Association.

I welcome the responsible and democratic action of fellow lawyers,” he said after highlighting the electoral process in the CAL and referring that in recent times the institution was absent from the country's legal work.

“I wish Dr. César Bazán successes in management,” Boluarte said.

We see with hope that CAL will once again be the legal voice of the country, especially now that we need to affirm the right to justice and the fight against impunity,” he added.
