In July 2021, the world was able to see the first previews of what would be Encanto, the first animated Disney film inspired by Colombia. After the resounding success of Coco, a film whose plot is set in Mexico, the excitement of the existence of a production by that company about the South American country increased with the days. Eight months have passed since that, more than half a year, in which, in addition to winning the hearts of thousands of people around the world, it has generated historical events for the country. Tonight, on Sunday, March 27, it will be known whether it will be recognized as one of the best creations on the big night of international cinema: the evening of the Oscars.
“This fall, the new film Encanto from Walt Disney Animation Studios takes you to Colombia, where a magical family lives in a magical home. Directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, co-directed and co-written by Charise Castro Smith, and music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda,” the company explained towards the end of 2020, which left expectations to the top. It was no wonder, and this has been demonstrated with the passing of days. After its release, in November 2021, it has not stopped accumulating recognition by specialists within the film industry and breaking records.
Although each and every flattery has been well received, the Oscar nominations did not go unnoticed. Tonight, Encanto is fighting to win the award in the category Best Animated Film, Best Original Soundtrack and Best Original Song. In the first mentioned selection, the Disney film starts to compete against Luca, Raya and the Last Dragon, Flee and The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Following this, it enters the list of Best Original Soundtrack with films such as Don't Look Up, Dune, The Power of the Dog and Parallel Mothers.
As for Best Original Song, the song 'Dos Oruguitas', performed by Sebastián Yatra and written by Lin Manuel Miranda, fights to be the winner on songs such as 'No Time to Die' from the most recent James Bond film of the same name (No Time to Die), 'Down to Joy' from Belfast, 'Somehow You Do' by Four Good Days and 'Be Alive' by King Richard.
This last category caused controversy because, although in numbers the song 'No talk about Bruno' achieved better results, it was not selected in that category. According to the explanation, 'There is no talk of Bruno' did not enter by date. Those in charge of the film had to submit their proposals for the Oscars until November 1. As a prediction, 'Dos Oruguitas' was sent, considering that it would be the best option to win the statuette, however, the song dedicated to the mysterious Bruno Madrigal broke out in hits.
The song, played by Carolina Gaitan and Mauro Castillo, topped Billboard's Hot 100 chart for five consecutive weeks, a record that, according to Billboard, was particular considering that it was an original song from a Disney tape. It also managed to hold the top position on the Hot 200 list for nine consecutive weeks. On Spotify, the song exceeds 226 million views.
The 94th Oscar Awards will take place, as previously mentioned, this Sunday, March 27, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The ceremony will begin at 8:00pm Miami time and will be broadcast in the United States on ABC. The live performance of Sebastián Yatra, who will perform 'Dos Oruguitas', and Carolina Gaitan and Mauro Castillo, who will sing 'There is no talk of Bruno', is expected tonight.
