On November 27, the Great Parade of Tradition of the Barranquilla Carnival was held. The parade was proceeding normally, when one of the mini boxes located on Via 40 had to be evacuated in an emergency.

According to El Heraldo, the attendees of the traditional parade were attacked by bees when they enjoyed the carnestolendas. Attendees were waiting for the parade when they began to feel bee stings all over their bodies.

Firefighters arrived at the scene, who attended to the emergency and the injured people. They also explained that the animals' reaction could be caused by the sound of sound equipment located in the area.

The firefighters also managed to remove the honeycomb to save the bees and attendants and control the situation.

The deputy commander of the Fire Department, Cesar Augusto Fonseca, spoke with the middle of Barranquilla and said that “there are bees scattered in the environment”, but there is no risk of a major emergency.

On their Twitter account, the Barranquilla Carnival assured that the parade had to be stopped in order to preserve the well-being of the participants.

Bees and wasps, like other animals, develop defense mechanisms when they feel disturbed. During the dry season, which is currently taking place in Medellin, it is more likely to appear in different environments. The outcrop, characteristic of this time of year, attracts insects and stimulates the reproduction of the queen bee.

Within ecosystems, bees and wasps play fundamental ecological roles in the pollination and transport of plant nutrients, which are part of the staple foods of many communities. However, the use of chemicals or the sacrifice of swarms has jeopardized their reproduction and preservation in the future.

Recommendations:

If you accidentally approach a swarm of bees, try to move away slowly, for no reason run away, because with movement you can disturb them.

If a bee lands on any part of its body, do not try to hit it, stand still or make gentle movements, until the insect retires.- Garbage containers are sources of attraction for bees, try to stay away from such containers.

During the dry season, try to wear clothes in inconspicuous colors and avoid using perfumes and hair sprays when going out to wooded areas.- Avoid throwing stones, sticks or branches to knock down the honeycombs.

When these animals bite, they release a pheromone that incites other members of the colony to bite, so it is recommended in case of a bite, to leave the accident area as soon as possible to avoid a massive attack.

If you know of a swarm of bees that poses a risk to you or your community, contact the 123 line so that the relevant agencies can take care of the situation.
