One of the most emotional matches of the final day of the 2022-I BetPlay League was the one between Deportivo Cali and Atlético Nacional, at the Palmaseca stadium. The 'Azucarero' team started winning 3-0 with goals from Teófilo Gutiérrez (12′), Guillermo Burdisso (16′) and Yony González (35′); however, 'Verdolaga' reacted in the second half and equalized the score. Giovanni Moreno (73′) and Dorlan Pabón (77′ and 90′) were in charge of contributing the goals for the visit.
The party had all kinds of arbitral controversies, because, of the four penalties that the central judge, Jhon Hinestroza, called out, some specialists considered that there were wrong determinations. In addition, the coach of 'Verde Paisa', Hernán Darío Herrera, was expelled in the final minutes of the match for alleged provocations to the local fans.
Faced with the sanction that the Antioquia strategist could face, this Friday the Disciplinary Committee of Dimayor published Resolution No. 016 of 2022, in which the sanctions corresponding to the last day in Colombian professional football were set out. In its fourth article, the entity explained that Herrera was suspended for two dates and received a fine of two million pesos.
According to the entity's report, the punishment against 'El Arriero', as it is popularly known, comes from “proceeding provocatively against the western tribune with 'gestures' generating security problems”.
In addition, the Field Commissioner provided a video confirming that Herrera did act inappropriately towards the followers 'Azucareros'. “Expelled D.T. from Atlético Nacional (...) for inappropriate acts, provoking the spectators of the western central lower north grandstand by inciting provocatively with gestures raising their arms and looking at the public provoking a furious reaction from those present, for which they threw objects at the bank visitor,” the report added.
In his disclaimers, Nacional argued that the behavior of its technical director was part of a “naturally emotional celebration, encouraging the team, considering that the club had come back an unfavorable result”. Likewise, the institution 'Purdolaga' argued that “the conduct did not produce any regrettable consequences”.
However, the Disciplinary Committee responded by ensuring that, even if the attendees were not harmed, the Technical Director is not “exempted from his disciplinary responsibility, since this is not an element that determines the typicity or otherwise of the conduct”.
“A connection can be made between Mr. Herrera's behavior and the way in which the fans approach the tribune visibly exalted. That is, the reaction of the fans does not occur specifically because of the adverse outcome but because of the behavior of the Technical Director”, concluded the resolution.
In this way, 'El Arriero' will not be able to stand on the bench for commitments against Independiente Santa Fe, this Monday, March 28 at the Atanasio Girardot stadium, or against Patriotas Boyacá, as a visitor (April 2).
Since Alejandro Restrepo left the technical direction, Atlético Nacional appointed Hernán Darío Herrera as interim coach, waiting to find a replacement. The first option was former Argentine player Hernán Crespo, however, he rejected the proposal and was recently confirmed as the new strategist of the Al-Duhail of Qatar.
In the internship of Nacional they also spoke with the Argentine Lucas Pusineri, who has not been directing at a professional level for more than a year after being dismissed from Independiente de Avellaneda. And, likewise, the club tried to communicate with Uruguayan Alfredo Arias, who in September last year was removed from Deportivo Cali.
Despite the fact that names continue to sound, the journalist, Felipe Sierra, revealed that the 'Verde Paisa' plan would be to keep Herrera “until an ideal candidate is found in the medium term.”
