Who Killed Lady Say? (Who killed Lady Di?) will be an upcoming limited series set in the events following the death of Princess Diana in 1997. That year in France, an accident took the lives of her and Egyptian producer Dodi Fayed — her partner — when they were both inside a vehicle crossing a tunnel at very high speed to escape the paparazzi.

The project to be produced by Headline Pictures (UK) and Itineraire Productions (France) will call on Julian Lilti to write the script in collaboration with Martine Monteil, the agent who led the French police investigation division when Diana Spencer passed away. Through various approaches to the event, the production will focus on the conspiracies that arose from this tragedy that marked the most private facet of British royalty.

The miniseries is built between fiction events and true facts, and will follow a French researcher and a Diana fan who create a blog to answer the following question: Who killed Lady Di? Around this website, theories about Diana's untimely death will resurface after separating from Prince Charles and showing her distance from the royal family.

“This is one of the first major cultural events that went viral and led to a flood of fake news and even a wave of suicides,” said Pierre Laugier, co-founder of Itineraire Productions. In addition, he says that the “late 1990s marked the beginning of online tabloids.”

On the other hand, Christian Baute, executive producer of Headline Pictures, argued that Who Killed Lady Di? “will highlight the fabrication of the first large-scale conspiracy theory: it was a turning point that changed the perception of the media about how to transmit and spread news.”

The main purpose of this commitment that borders on fiction and reality will be to show a behind the scenes of research and media turmoil surrounding the death of Princess Diana. “The Americans have JFK and Marilyn Monroe, and we have Princess Diana, they are of equal importance,” Baute added.

The interest of film and TV in keeping Lady Di current

It has been 25 years since Diana Spencer died in a series of unforgettable events for the whole world, but her name has once again been the subject of discussion thanks to the magic of the big and small screen. In 2020, the fourth season of The Crown introduced the Princess of Wales into its narrative, which was how the role of its young version fell to Emma Corrin and, soon, Elizabeth Debicki will dazzle the audience as the successor in the role.

Cinema has also become an ideal setting for maintaining the intelligence and beauty of this woman who was loved by millions of people. Spencer, directed by Pablo Larrain, portrays a stage in his life — under the interpretation of Kristen Stewart — in which there is debate about moving forward with her marriage or cutting this bond in the bud to embrace her freedom. While attending the Crown Christmas holiday, she prepares for the storm she will be engulfed in when she makes her separation from Prince Charles official.
