After its release, The Squid Game (Squid Game) became the most successful title in the history of Netflix. Its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, spent 10 years trying to carry out this script until he finally got the chance to film the series and make it one of the best productions in South Korea. Soon after its premiere, speculation began to be made about a second season and the news was later confirmed by the same platform.
Dong-hyuk clarified that, for the development of the original plot, he spent a good time focusing on designing this engaging narrative and giving different layers to the characters. In conversation with The Korea Times, he had stated that this time he would love to have a team of screenwriters and explore the other side of the coin, that is, to delve into the lives of those who are responsible for making these games possible and revealing exactly what their origin is.
Recently, the South Korean filmmaker and his cast were present at the Producers Guild Awards ceremony, in the United States, and was asked about what will be seen in the next episodes. “There will be more great games, that's all I can say,” he said in response to Deadline. “I'm still brainstorming and collecting ideas for season two. I haven't even started writing yet.”
As you remember, some members of the cast of El juego del calamar would be out of the sequel call, because they saw their fictional peers die on screen. “They won't [come back], because most of them are dead,” he said, but could they reappear through a flashback? “I'll try something to bring them back to season 2,” he added.
In that regard, Hwang Dong-hyuk confessed that he would like to bring back Kang Sae-byeok, the character of actress HoYeon Jung. “Let's say she might have a twin sister, you'll see,” she said, and she added, laughing: “I could change the color of my hair. Let's do a little like plastic surgery.” At the moment, there are no further details on when the shooting of this second installment would start.
The South Korean fiction that made history on Netflix
In September 2021, The Squid Game arrived in the catalog of Netflix and quickly concentrated a large community of viewers who couldn't stop talking about what they saw. The phenomenon grew more and more to position itself as the number 1 most watched in the world, surpassing other successes such as La casa de papel, Lupin and Élite with a total of 1,650 million hours watched in its first 28 days.
According to the streaming service, the series is described as follows: “Several people at risk who are in urgent need of money receive a mysterious invitation. Locked in a secret location, 456 contestants from all walks of life take part in games to win 45.6 billion won. All tests are traditional Korean children's games like 'Green light, red light', but losers die. Who will get the prize and what is the purpose of this game?”
Based on South Korea's social problems, production caught the public with its honesty and crudeness in measuring how far human beings can go to achieve a full life in a globalized and capitalist world, the same one that envelops everyone in the circle of money. Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, O Yeong-su, Hoyeon Jung, Heo Sung-tae, Kim Joo-ryoung and Anupam Tripathi formed the main cast of the first season.
