Since 2010, great and prominent contemporary and classic artists from around the world have been brought to Colombia for whom many have waited: The Killers, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, Pixies, Vampire Weekend, Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey, Guns and Roses, New Order are just some of those who have led the cartels, and that they have given it enough recognition to live up to festivals such as Lollapalooza or Rock in Rio.
However, with the death of Taylor Hawkins, the drummer of Foo Fighters, another rock legend band that was expected to be part of its history, a performance that promised to be one of the most energetic of Dave Grohl's group, which has always had a special affection for the Colombian public, is frustrated.
The death, as has been recorded in the world and Colombian media, led to the cancellation of all the concerts that the band had scheduled in Latin America and took place just hours after their presentation.
This is the second time that Estéreo Picnic has dressed in mourning, since in the previous edition, that of 2019, the show of one of the most representative bands of electronic music of the 1990s, had been scheduled, The Prodigy.
With the suicide of the frontman of the British group, Keith Flint, who ended his life just a month after stepping on Colombian soil, the desire of thousands of Colombians who had been eager to see them on the national territory for years was ruined.
And although this presentation was solved with the show given by Underworld, another legend of the so-called Big Beat, and which has also been one of the most outstanding in the history of the festival, it was still a very strong blow at that edition.
Months after his death, an article in El País de España reported that the debts and depression suffered by the artist had caused the desire to end his own life.
Now, with the death of Hawkins, the festival is once again suffering a severe setback, which although it would have been resolved in principle with the alternatives they proposed about the ticket office, it does not cease to affect it since it had gone through another difficult time with its postponement due to the pandemic.
This loss brings to mind other tragic deaths of famous people, who passed through the country and lost their lives due to various causes.
Carlos Gardel whose plane crashed on June 24, 1935. In addition to the singer, there were 16 more deaths among which were his secretary, his guitarist and his manager. The incident occurred in the middle of the tour that the King of Tango was doing, when he left for Cali.
There is also the death in 2021 of British actor Justin James Danton, who was in Colombia to work on an audiovisual project. The artist's short career was cut short in the early hours of Monday, August 9, when he was 35 years old.
As he crossed Avenida Regional, in the La Aguacatala sector of southern Medellín, two ghost vehicles hit him, according to the newspaper El País.
Another of the deaths of world artists in Colombia was that of Miguelito Valdés in 1978, who collapsed in the middle of the concert he performed in the Red Room of the Hotel Tequendama.
