After a member of the United States Armed Forces declared that Russia maintains in Mexico the largest group of spies in the world , the embassy of the government of Vladimir Putin on Mexican territory issued a statement in which it assured that there are no arguments to sustain such a thing. He also called US interference in a relationship between nations that did not involve them as unacceptable.
It was Glen VanHerck, chief of the Northern Command of the Armed Forces, who in a report to his country's Congress warned of the presence of Russian intelligence in the neighboring country. Immediately, Eurasian officials gave a response in which they accused of being interventionist and propaganda what the military said.
“The Russian Embassy has carefully analysed the speech of Mr. Glen D. VanHerck and his opinion that they have no basis about the presence of 'Russian military spies' in Mexico. Once again, we can observe US propaganda whose main objective is to isolate Russia and Russian diplomats around the world by means of fake news,” the text that addressed Ken Salazar reads.
The letter also highlights the right of countries to shape their foreign policy without pressure from other powers. The recent Friendship Group formed between Mexican deputies and Russian authorities was noted to, in turn, question the relationship that States have historically maintained United with the border country.
“We consider it unacceptable when the US tries to influence the sovereign decisions of the Mexican Government. Saying that 'Mexico has different friendship groups, but does not have a friendship like it does with the United States', does it take into account the annexation by the United States — Mexico's 'best friend' — half of its national territory in the 19th century?” , were the verbatim words.
At the press conference on Friday, March 25, Andrés Manuel López Obrador was questioned about the issue, specifically whether he had knowledge of Russian spies in the territory and what opinion he deserved what VanHerck said.
“We are not going to question anything. We are respectful of the free manifestation of ideas. Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign country. Mexico is not a colony of any foreign country. We are not a colony of Russia, nor of China, nor of the United States. We are not going to spy on anyone,” said the president.
In addition to the war between Russia and Ukraine, the facts also take place in the context in which Mexican legislators formed a Friendship Group with the Russian government through their diplomatic representatives in the territory. The actions were mainly driven by the Parliamentary Group of the Labour Party and was attended by Viktor Koronelli, Russian ambassador to Mexico.
On the grounds of mutual respect and interests between nations, Koronelli welcomed what was done by the deputies. “This mechanism is for us a show of support, solidarity and friendship,” he said. As expected, the situation generated controversy over the possibility of sending the wrong message regarding the war conflict, which has already been condemned by López Obrador and his chancellors.
