“Let's connect with nature and raise our voice for nature” is one of the phrases that have been used to promote Earth Hour, an event which brings together the citizens of several countries to become aware of the environmental impact we are experiencing today. Peru maintains constant participation, so the media, artists and public and private institutions are committed to its fulfillment.
It is important to note that Peru suffered one of the worst environmental attacks in history when the oil spill in the Peruvian sea was reported, contaminating the habitat of marine species, many of them dying from poisoning and others left with serious internal and external injuries.
WHEN IS EARTH HOUR?
In Peru it will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022. It is expected that a large number of Peruvians will be encouraged to participate from their homes, in order not to create agglomerations that could increase the number of COVID-19 cases.
¿A QUÉ HORA ES?
The event organized for Earth Hour 2022 will begin at 8:30 p.m. and will be held in more than 190 countries.
How to participate? With simple actions from our routine we can participate and motivate others to join. For example, separating garbage, disconnecting those items that we are not using at the moment, turning off lights and not leaving open pipes, among others.
It is 60 minutes in which individuals, families and groups reflect on what they can change in their lives to help preserve the planet, our only home.
PERU AT EARTH HOUR
Officially, in 2009 our country joined this movement for the first time. Their participation became the largest and most important environmental campaign ever carried out in the Peruvian territory. According to official data, 8 million citizens participated in this debut event, making us the global leader of the edition.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD?
“As we continue to adapt our lives to the impacts of COVID-19 and the catastrophic events of past years, we create a 'new normal' that puts people and the planet first. We can't go back to “business as usual.” We need to build a positive future for nature with zero carbon emissions”, explained in an official article by WWF Peru.
EARTH HOUR ACTIVITIES
To join the community of participants, you can connect to the live broadcast that will take place on WWF Peru's social networks.
You will be able to participate in the discussion “The Impact on People of Environmental Disasters”, which will offer a space for reflection on the effects of oil spills on people's lives and ecosystems.
On the official website of the organization, the sustainable commitments of different companies, organizations and citizens who want to leave a positive mark on our planet will be shared.
THE GOAL FOR 2022
Earth Hour will encourage people to join local events (virtually), share their stories of why nature matters to them, and learn more on why climate change and the loss of nature are the two biggest environmental problems facing our planet today.
In addition, you can help acting for people and the planet in these 60 minutes of disconnection by committing to a sustainable lifestyle and influencing world leaders to do the right thing. “We all have the power to shape our future! ”, indicates the invitation of the World Wildlife Fund in Peru.
