Just over nine months ago, Christian Eriksen collapsed in the middle of the field during a match of his national team in the European Championship and his state of health worried an entire planet. The life-threatening heart problem kept him away from the courts for a long period, but weeks ago he officially reappeared with the Brentford shirt in the Premier League and this weekend he had the return with the Denmark jersey: he scored a goal within minutes of taking the field.
The 30-year-old was summoned by coach Kasper Hjulmand for the friendlies against the Netherlands and Serbia scheduled on the FIFA Date. This Saturday began the duel against the Dutch on the substitute bench, but he jumped into the field with the number 10 jersey as soon as the second half began to cover Jesper Lindstrom's place.
Two minutes had passed when Andreas Skov Olsen overflowed to the right and threw a cross back to the door of the area: Eriksen appeared alone and took out a powerful right hand that overcame the resistance of goalkeeper Mark Flekken.
That score meant 2-3 for his team, which had left at halftime 3-1 down the scoreboard after the goals of Steven Bergwijn, Nathan Aké and Memphis Depay, beyond the fact that Jannik Vestergaard had temporarily equalized. The match played at the Johan Cruijff Arena ended with a favorable 4-2 for those led by Louis van Gaal as Bergwijn stretched the difference a little later.
Eriksen spent more than eight months inactive after suffering a heart problem in the clash against Finland in the group stage of the Euro Cup. At the end of February he reappeared with the Brentford Premier League jersey, the club that decided to hire him after he left Inter Italy. The footballer told a while ago that he was “dead five minutes” as a result of the cardiac arrest that affected him, but after the operation ( they placed an automatic defibrillator implantable) his desire is to reach the World Cup in Qatar.
Denmark qualified for the World Cup in first place in the group they shared with Scotland, Israel, Austria, Faroe Islands and Moldova. It is currently one of the teams that aspires to be seeded in the draw that will take place on April 1, although that will be known hours before the event when FIFA gives the last update of the ranking that will accommodate the qualifiers in the pots.
The player, who had logically had his last performance with the Danish national team on the day of his heart accident, started at Ajax in the Netherlands and then passed through Tottenham in England and Inter Italy before returning to the Premier League. In his new club he has three appearances (two as a starter) and scored no goals.
