Luciana Temer, the eldest daughter of former Brazilian president Michael Temer (20016-2018), revealed this Saturday that years ago she was raped after an armed robbery, but noted that she never said anything for fear of exposing herself and her family.
“I was 27 years old, I had recently left the position of commissioner in a women's police station and the most natural thing in the world would be to have made the complaint, but I didn't do it,” Temer said during an interview with the Mina platform, linked to the Internet service provider UOL.
“I thought they would never find it, so I said to myself, 'Why expose myself? ' As if the fact that I was a victim of sexual violence exposed me,” he added.
At that time, the lawyer, now 53 years old, only revealed the tragic event to her husband and sisters and later to her children, so the facts were only known in a very closed family environment, which she today considers “stupid”.
“Sexual violence is permeating our society. This is the only crime in which the victim is ashamed of having suffered, which is absurd,” he said.
Luciana Temer, who today runs a foundation that helps children and adolescents victims of sexual exploitation, considers it essential that such cases be reported, since silence “perpetuates” these abuses.
“We need to talk to find out that we are not alone. As long as we don't break the silence, this reality will remain,” he said.
According to the Brazilian Public Safety Forum, at least 56,098 women were raped in 2021 in Brazil, an increase of 3.7% compared to 2020, which means that every 10 minutes a woman was sexually abused.
The lawyer is the oldest of the five children of former President Temer, who took office as head of the Brazilian state in August 2016, following the dismissal of Dilma Rousseff, accused of alleged financial irregularities to alter public accounts in an impeachment trial.
