Victor Trujillo urged answers to Ebrard after US alert for Russian spies in Mexico

Just over a month ago, Russia's invasion of Ukraine began. From the beginning, although somewhat doubtful, the Mexican government took a stand against it and called for a ceasefire; however, despite the demands, they did not apply economic sanctions and even installed a friendship group with the country led by Vladimir Putin.

This whole context has only led to negative comments from the opposition, which requested real action, in addition to always issuing a position against the statements and activities of the Fourth Transformation (Q4) on this issue.

And this time it was no exception, as the communicator Víctor Trujillo urged answers from Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), after United States authorities warned about the alleged presence of Russian spies in the country.

It was Glen VanHerck, head of the U.S. Northern Command, who warned of the significant presence of Russian intelligence personnel in Mexico, noting his “concern” over China and Russia's efforts to influence the Americas region.

This official, who serves as the leader of the US Northern Command, appeared before the US Senate to ask for more budget and explained Russian strategies. In addition, he said that there are “very aggressive and active” actors in the North American and Caribbean area, and specifically mentioned Mexico and the Bahamas.

VanHerck assured that the main intelligence organization in Russia, Glavnoye Razvedyvatelnoye Upravlenie (GRU), seeks to influence within the US territory; the Central Intelligence Department is the military intelligence service available to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

“I would like to point out that most of the GRU members in the world are in Mexico at the moment. Those are Russian intelligence personnel. And they closely monitor their opportunities for influence in the US,” he said.

Given this message, the creator of the character Brozo decided to send a certain comment to the chancellor asking for his position on these statements, which have not been confirmed or denied by the López Obrador administration.

“Of this statement, can you give us any comments in your capacity as Secretary of Foreign Affairs, dear @m_ebrard? ”, Trujillo wrote on his personal Twitter account.

For its part, the citizens' organization Civil Society Mexico shared the video of Glen VanHerck's statements and mentioned that it is a serious issue, although it said it now “understands” the reason why the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group was created.

“A considerable number of members of Russian intelligence services are in #Mexico, and the US government has identified them. Now it is understood how it is possible that in the Mexican Congress they celebrate the Mexico-Russia brotherhood This is serious,” he wrote on social networks.

On this controversial mechanism of parliamentary diplomacy, it was integrated last Wednesday 23 by members of the benches of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), the Labor Party (PT) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) with the aim of establishing a peaceful link and mutual dialogue that promotes “a diplomatic agreement and a peaceful way out where the parties put down their arms”.

However, the US Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, warned, after the announcing of this group and the reception of the Mexican deputies to the Russian ambassador to Mexico, Viktor Koronelli, that “can never happen” a close relationship between these two countries.

“We must stand in solidarity with Ukraine and against Russia. It seems to me that the Russian ambassador was here yesterday making noise that Mexico and Russia were so close. That can never happen,” said the US official.
