The Uruguay National Team stepped strong at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo by beating their par with Peru 1-0 thanks to a goal by Giorgian de Arrascaeta and thus secure their ticket directly to the Qatar 2022 World Cup (the other qualifiers are Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador).

However, at 91 minutes there was the great controversy of Date 17. Miguel Trauco issued a cross that complicated goalkeeper Sergio Rochet, who had to take a few steps backwards to contain the ball. This action opened up a big question mark. Did the ball pass the goal line? The play was in the first minute of addition and would have meant a draw, so the table of the Playoffs would have changed radically.

Faced with such a stir, CONMEBOL decided to release the VAR audios. Thanks to the help of technology, the assistant video referee confirmed to Brazilian judge Anderson Daronco that the action was not considered a goal since the ball did not completely cross the finish line between the posts and the crossbar.

“Calm down, check that out,” Daronco pleaded while one of his assistants argued that it was a goal for those led by Ricardo Gareca. “Let's check with the camera, let's continue and let's go calmly,” one of the members of the VAR told the referee. A few moments later the confirmation came: “Checked, he did not enter”.

It is worth noting that in the South American Playoffs there is no DAG, which is the Automatic Goal Detector (the famous chip that is embedded in the ball). There is only the appreciation of the camera and the simple impression of sight.
