To date, Colombia has not received awards at the Oscars, however it has been nominated on several occasions. However, several films in the country have been recognized in the Students Academy Awards, which are awarded annually by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences to the best film productions made by university students.

The Student Academy Awards have been held annually since 1973 and award university work in the categories of Best Dramatic and Alternative Documentary Animation. Therefore, being a special addition to the Academy Awards, it does not award a statuette, but gold, silver and bronze medals, such as a sports competition.

As is the case with Patricia Cardoso, who in 1996 was the first Colombian to win the aforementioned award with the Short Film The Kingdom of Heavens, for which she won the gold medal in the category in which her production was nominated.
