Not only with Russia, Congress of Mexico established Friendship Group with the United States

Kenneth Lee Salazar, US Ambassador to Mexico, said he agreed to strengthen the bilateral relationship, because the economies of the two nations are one

In a global context marked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Chamber of Deputies decided to establish the Mexico-United States Friendship Group, which will perform diplomatic functions between the federal legislature and the neighboring country.

So this Thursday, March 24, the group was set up, which was chaired by Miguel Torruco, federal deputy for Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), who stated that the bilateral agenda should focus on three issues: simplifying migrant voting, extending temporary work visa programs and promoting legislative exchange through diplomacy.

The president of this Friendship Group pointed out that both nations are twinned by 36 million Mexicans who crossed the border in search of better living conditions and, at the same time, contribute to the growth and consolidation of the North American economy, but they are also a fundamental part of Mexico's development, since, as well as in 2021 alone, remittances amounted to USD 55,594 million.

On his own, Rubén Moreira, president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) of San Lázaro, said that Mexico and the United States have had difficult moments in their relationship, as do all nations, but in crucial moments they have been together. In addition to being partners in industry, livestock, ecology, renewable energy, among others.

Under this logic, the standard-bearer for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) recalled that there are joint issues such as migration, trafficking in persons and arms, security and drug trafficking, “which sometimes takes on terrorist overtones and is also becoming a force that threatens freedoms, democracy and peace for all.”

Alfredo Femat, deputy of the Labour Party (PT) and chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations in the lower house, said that both nations are linked by one of the largest, most complex and dynamic borders in the world. In addition, great natural wealth is shared and there are large trade exchanges.

He called for strengthening ties between Mexico and the US in an “increasingly vulnerable” world, so redesigning an agenda based on reciprocity, diversity and common interests is of the utmost importance. Ignacio Mier Velazco, Morena's coordinator in San Lázaro, also highlighted the respect with which the US representation is received.

Finally, Kenneth Lee Salazar, US ambassador to Mexico, said he agreed to strengthen the bilateral relationship, because the economies of the two nations are one, so President Joe Biden's administration seeks to end wall relations, “because that is not how a family, nor neighbors, nor is it the reality of Mexico and the United States”.

He recalled the historical, commercial and cultural precedents between the two nations, and therefore announced his country's interest in investing in the northern border, in the development of the southeast, reaching agreements on renewable energy and reiterated that the respect of contracts and agreements that have been made between companies has allowed the existence of investment, because “if there is no trust there will be no investment”.
