The Mariupol authorities confirmed at least 300 people killed by the bombing of the theater where civilians were sheltering. About 1,300 people are believed to have taken refuge in the building, and only 150 survivors staggered out of the rubble immediately after the attack.
Sources said that most of those in the theater had been hiding from the bombings under the stage and that the debris was blocking their exit.
There are no emergency services operating in Mariupol, and heavy fighting and shelling near the theater have prevented rescue attempts.
