Gianfranco Quattrini, director of “Encintados”, and Peruvian actress Magdyel Ugaz broke their silence after receiving a rain of criticism from the LGBTIQ community. The release of the first trailer of the film was not liked by users, who lashed out at the film for humorously taking on social problems that afflict lesbian or bisexual couples.
Through the film's official social networks, the filmmaker released the following statement in order to put cold cloths on the situation: “Hello, I'm Gianfranco Quattrini, director of Encintados. I decided to share this message by reading comments that some members of LGBTIQ collectives have posted, after the release of the trailer for our film,” he said at the beginning.
“Encintados addresses several issues that are very sensitive to our society. We do not propose to increase the differences, much less ignore the struggle of the collectives, nor the serious problems they face. The film was made to provide a message of love, respect and inclusion,” he added.
Finally, the film director assured that this mistake will not happen again in the following promotional advances for “Encintados”. “We recorded that this first exit has generated some misunderstandings, we apologize for causing that, and we note to improve our future communication.”
MAGDYEL UGAZ IS ALSO PRONOUNCED
The prominent actress, remembered for her role as Teresita in Al Fondo Hay Sitio, shared Quattrini's message on her official Instagram account. Far from taking the criticism in a negative way, Magdyel thanked the public's opinion for further improvement.
“I accompany the feelings of our director and I appreciate all the comments because they invite us to continue looking at ourselves as a society, learning about topics that have been totally invisible,” said Ugaz.
WHAT GENERATED SO MUCH CONTROVERSY?
After the release of the first official trailer, “Encintados” was quite questioned on social networks. Unlike “Until we meet again”, users did not criticize the film for the choice of actors, but for the plot in question.
“Martina wants to be a mother, but she has one obstacle: she is a lesbian and does not have the financial resources. With the support of his girlfriend Sofía, he devises a perfect plan: to seduce an Argentine tourist in Cusco so that — without knowing it — he makes her pregnant. When Facundo, the involuntary donor, discovers the truth, he returns to Peru to assume his paternity and make Martina fall in love”, is the official synopsis of the film.
On the social network Twitter, netizens criticized the story for allegedly stereotyping lesbian or bisexual women. In addition, for taking with a humor a pregnancy not consented by a man.
“Comedy film that trivializes the LGBTIQ+ community, insists on the exoticization of Cusco as a place of rituals and seduction of tourists”, “If you are going to talk about LGTBQ, call us, ask, read, I don't know, use common sense”, “A bisexual woman can be faithful to her relationship being with a woman. They replicate the terrible stereotype of infidelity,” were some of the comments.
