The controversial deputy of the PT assured that Mexico can carry out such groups as long as they have not broken diplomatic relations

Gerardo Fernández Noroña, federal deputy for the Labor Party (PT), defended the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group from former legislator Arturo Escobar y Vega, who said it was an “Absolutely Reckless” act.

Through his Twitter account, the former member of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM), questioned the benches that organized to unite and establish a link with the country led by Vladimir Putin, who decided to invade Ukraine just over a month ago.

“I fail to understand the decision of some Federal Deputies to go to the constitution of the friendship group with Russia at this juncture. Absolutely reckless!!” , wrote Escobar.

This message was answered by Fernández Noroña on this same social network. The petista assured that he was “carried away” by the “overwhelming” propaganda generated against the European country, which, he said, “certainly has friends”.

Immediately afterwards, Arturo Escobar reversed the controversial legislator and mentioned that this group “is not one of friends”, since it is a “riddled” people, so they would be expected to repudiate it instead of linking up with it.

“No Gerardo, this is not from friends, it is about solidarity with a people who are being gunned down by another nation. If Mexico were living what Ukraine suffers today, I would expect all the nations of the world to repudiate the facts. Like this!!” , he wrote.

Fernández Noroña pointed out that Russia's invasion of Ukraine has also been rejected by other countries, including Mexico, although this stance does not prohibit governments from setting up friendship groups, such as the one created by the Chamber of Deputies.

He also said he was surprised by Escobar's inexperience in this type of issue, despite having been a legislator, since any group can be installed until diplomatic relations have been broken before.

“Rejection exists. Friendship groups too. I am surprised that, having been a legislator for so long, you do not know that there is no criterion for not setting up a friendship group until diplomatic relations have been broken with that country,” he recalled.

Finally, he questioned the former deputy of the Green Ecologist about his stance against the invasions carried out by the United States. “On the other hand, I have never seen you in that firm stance against the U.S. invasions of dozens of countries around the world. Abrazote”, Fernández Noroña finished.

Last Wednesday 23, the benches of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), the PT and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) installed this mechanism of parliamentary diplomacy with the aim of establishing a peaceful link and mutual dialogue that promotes “a diplomatic agreement and a peaceful exit where the parties put down their arms”.

We are here with the interest of installing this group in difficult times, of great controversy, but we want to insist that this is precisely a Friendship Group, and not in the interest of making conflicts,” said Alberto Anaya (PT), president of the Mexico-Russia Friendship Group.

On his own, Viktor Koronelli, Russian Ambassador to Mexico, thanked the invitation to the installation meeting of the Friendship Group, and said that the bilateral relationship with Mexico has a strategic character based on mutual respect for interests.

Since its inception, there have been several criticisms by analysts, journalists and politicians, including the parties that generated it, who disagree with this group, since they have assured that they are insensitive to the situation in Ukraine.
